Software tool makes PowerPoint easier for disabled to use
Whether in the classroom or the boardroom, chalkboards have been replaced nearly universally by computer-aided audiovisual presentations that commonly involve a laptop computer and Microsoft PowerPoint software. And while that change has proved beneficial for most presenters and their audiences, a notable exception is for people with disabilities.

Ruth Marie Anderson, 88, died Jan. 11 in Colorado Springs. Anderson worked for 48 years as administrative assistant in the offices of the vice president and of the provost, retiring in 1992. Memorials: The Activity Fund, Medalion Retirement Community, 1719 E. Bijou, Colorado Springs, CO 80909.

Norton Moore Bedford, 87, died Nov. 26 in Pasadena, Calif. Bedford was a professor of accountancy at the UI for 34 years and head of the department of accountancy, retiring in 1987. He also held the Weldon Powell Chair of Accounting and was named an Arthur Young Distinguished Professor of Accountancy and Business Administration. Memorials: UI Office of Accounting Research or Wesley Methodist Church.

Dale T. Boyer, 89, died Jan. 4 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Boyer was an administrative aide at the UI for 35 years, retiring in 1975. In addition, he worked more than 20 additional years as Extra Help after retirement. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association.

Ellen Francine Carey-Bowie, 62, died Dec. 28 at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Logan Campus, Danville. Carey-Bowie worked at the UI for 15 years, during most of that time as a maid at the UI’s Beckwith Hall in the Division of Rehabilitation Education Services.

David Robert Day, 73, died Dec. 26 in Bloomington, Ind. Day was an associate professor of industrial administration from 1965 to 1969 and during the summers of 1970 and 1971. He returned to the UI in 1981 as a professor in the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations and served as head of the Management Education program. He also provided labor relations leadership for the development of the Center for Human Resource Management in conjunction with the department of management at UIC and served as the first co-director of that center for the Urbana campus. He retired in 1993. Memorials: St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the National Cancer Research Institute or the Champaign County Humane Society.

Marvin E. Decker, 58, died Jan. 8 in Champaign. Decker was a building service foreman for the UI for 23 years. Memorials: American Heart Association.

Clive F. Dunham, 94, died Jan. 5 at The Windsor of Savoy. Dunham worked at the UI for 12 years, retiring in 1977. He worked both in the Bureau of Business Research and as a professor of accountancy.

Philip E. Fess, 72, died Dec. 4 at his home in Naples, Fla. Fess was an Arthur Andersen & Co. professor of accountancy at the UI, retiring in 1987 after working at the UI for 35 years. Memorials: American Cancer Society Naples Chapter, 990 First Ave., Suite 200, Naples, FL 34102.

Henry Eugene “Harry” Gordon,
76, died Dec. 14 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Gordon worked at the UI for 24 years, retiring in 1996. During most of that time he worked as a construction laborer at the Division of Operation and Maintenance and later worked as a storekeeper.

Delores “Dolly” Merchant Hanson, 85, died Jan. 10 at Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home, Elmwood, Wis. Hanson was a visiting assistant editor in the Graduate College from 1980 to 1985.

Doris Ruth Hendricks, 95, died Dec. 1 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Hendricks worked at the UI for 30 years in the Housing Division, starting in 1960. She worked as a cook and as a food service administrator.

John H. Hoch, 81, died Jan. 5 at his Rantoul home. Hoch worked at UI’s Willard Airport for 14 years. He was a campus transportation operator and retired as a master airport mechanic in 1984. Memorials: Provena Covenant Hospice Care Program or American Lutheran Church.

Rachel E. Marlowe, 82, died Jan. 3 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Marlowe was a lab technician for the College of Veterinary Medicine from 1989 through 1995. Memorials: University Pace Christian Church.

John W. Matthews, 92, died Jan. 5 at St. Joseph Health Center, St. Charles. Matthews taught prospective agricultural teachers mechanical skills at the UI in 1950. He left the UI, returning in 1961 as head of the Vocational Agriculture Service. He retired as a full professor in 1976. Memorials: First United Methodist Church, Champaign.

Alberta McClara,
90, died Dec. 29 at Champaign County Nursing Home. McClara was a secretary at the UI veterinary clinic. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society.
Frances Margaret Meyers, 87, died Dec. 22 at Medical Care Center, Lynchburg, Ill. Meyers was a UI cashier. Memorials: Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry Inc.

Harold Glenn Miller, 66, died Dec. 13 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Miller worked at the UI for 30 years and was a building service worker supervisor with O&M when he retired in 1994. Memorials: Community Blood Services of Illinois, 1408 W. University Ave., Urbana.

Lawrence F. Oakes, 83, died Jan. 2 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Oakes was employed at the UI for 29 years, working as a groundsworker for O&M from 1965 until 1978, and then as a driver in the transportation department from 1978 until his retirement in 1993. Memorials: St. Patrick’s Church Parish Center, 708 W. Main St., Urbana.

Theodore R. Peck,
72, died Dec. 27 at his Champaign home. Peck was a professor of soil chemistry in the UI department of natural resources and environmental sciences. He had worked at the UI since 1962. Memorials: Ted Peck Memorial Award Endowment, c/o UI Foundation, Harker Hall, 1305 W. Green St., MC-386.

Marie Ellen Pflugmacher, 94, died Jan. 15 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. She worked as a secretary at the UI for 26 years, retiring in 1976 from the College of Commerce and Business Administration.

Alberto Porqueras-Mayo, 73, died Dec. 30 in Barcelona, Spain. Porqueras-Mayo was a UI professor of Spanish from 1968 until he retired in 1997.

Samuel Sherman Sibley Sr.,
80, died Jan. 9 at Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System, Danville. Sibley retired in 1985 from the UI as a building service worker. Memorials: St. Luke C.M.E. Church New Edifice Fund.

Kathryn Watford Smith, 84, died Dec. 17 at her Urbana home. Smith was an assistant professor of home economics at Illinois from 1971 to 1974. Memorials: Wesley Methodist Church and Foundation Flower Fund.

Leona Neilorene Thornton, 75, died Dec. 10 at Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello. Thornton worked at the UI for 23 years. She was a secretary for College of Education administration when she retired in 2000. Memorials: Piatt County Nursing Home Alzheimer’s Unit.

John W. Stiebner, 84, died Dec. 14 at ManorCare Health Services of Urbana. Stiebner was a building service worker in the UI’s Division of Operation and Maintenance for 25 years, retiring in 1982. Memorials: First Baptist Church of Champaign.

Brian Francis Wilkie, 74, died Dec. 14 in Springdale, Ark. Wilkie taught at the UI for 22 years. Memorials: Fayetteville Humane Society, 1640 S. Armstrong, Fayetteville, AR 72701.
