Legislator letters make an impact in budgeting process
As the spring session of the Illinois General Assembly draws to a close and legislators begin to consider the university's budget for the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1, a broad spectrum of people in the campus community are making their voices heard.

Nick Holonyak Jr., a John Bardeen Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been selected as the 2004 recipient of the Lemelson-MIT Prize.
Eight staff members honored with Chancellor’s Distinguished Staff Award
Eight staff employees will be honored with the Chancellor’s Distinguished Staff Award at a banquet beginning at 5:30 p.m. April 22 at Peabody Private Dining Room. The award recognizes exceptional performance and service to the UI.

deaths
Anastasia Christen-Moore, 71, died April 8 at her home in Champaign. Christen-Moore worked in the Housing Division for more than 23 years, retiring in 1987 as food service administrator. Memorials: Provena Covenant Hospice Care Program.

Clara Louise Cole, 81, died April 8 in Manistee, Mich. Cole was a typing clerk in the UI Visual Aids and Film Center for 16 years, retiring in 1982. Memorials: First Baptist Church, 1201 Lakeshore Road, Manistee, MI 49660.

Rita Darlene Disroe, 45, died April 1 at her home in Champaign. Disroe worked as an editor as an academic hourly for 10 years, leaving the UI in 1994.

Michael Faiman, 69, died April 15 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Faiman was a professor of computer science for 33 years, retiring in 1999. He was director of graduate programs in computer science from 1985 until his retirement. Memorials: National Cancer Institute, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Krannert Art Museum or WILL-TV.

Mary Elizabeth Bennett Farnham, 96, died Feb. 16 at Meadowbrook Health Center, Urbana. Farnham was a senior lab attendant in the Small Homes Council Building from 1951 to 1953.

Upson Garrigus, 86, died March 31 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Garrigus joined the UI in 1947 as assistant professor of animal sciences, attaining the rank of full professor in 1955. He retired as professor emeritus in 1987.

Carl Alvin Johnson Sr., 97, died April 1 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Johnson worked as a farm laborer for animal husbandry at the UI for 21 years, retiring in 1948. Memorials: Countryside United Methodist Church, 990 CR 1800 E., Mahomet, IL 61853.

Leah Dunn Linse, 95, died April 6 at Regency Place, Lafayette, Ind. Linse was an administrative secretary for animal science at the UI for 20 years, retiring in 1972. Memorials: First United Methodist Church, 210 W. Church St., Champaign.

Richard Donald Millican,
97, died April 7 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Millican was a professor of marketing at the UI for 21 years, retiring in 1971. Memorials: Urbana Free Library.

Virgil C. Rawlings, 93, died April 7 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Rawlings was an athletic assistant in the UI Division of Intercollegiate Athletics for 27 years, retiring in 1974.

Barbara Roberts, 65, died April 7 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Roberts was a snack bar supervisor at the UI golf course in Savoy for five years, retiring in 1994. Memorials: Carle Hospital Lung Cancer Research or Champaign County Humane Society.

Rosalya F. “Rose” Schmidt,
88, died March 27 at her home in Urbana. Schmidt worked for the Coordinated Science Lab for more than 18 years, retiring in 1979 as administrative secretary. Memorials: American Lung Association.

Donald L. Stutz, 85, died April 14 at ManorCare Health Services of Urbana. Stutz worked at the UI Physical Plant for 32 years, retiring in 1983.
