U.S. News releases its annual grad school rankings

In its latest rankings of America’s best graduate schools, U.S.News & World Report ranked a number of UI units best in the nation, including the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the department of accountancy and the department of civil engineering. The issue hit newstands April 3. The magazine does not evaluate all disciplines every year.

How other UI colleges, departments and specialties fared:

Within the education category, how UI specialties were ranked nationally: curriculum/instruction, 4; educational psychology,  4; elementary education, 8; secondary education, 8; special education, 5; vocational/technical, 5.

Within the engineering category, how UI departments were ranked nationally: aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical, 7; computer engineering, 5; electrical/electronic/communications, 4; environmental/environmental health, 5; materials, 2; mechanical, 5.

Within the library and information studies category, how UI specialties were ranked nationally: digital librarianship, 1; health librarianship, 8; information systems, 4; law librarianship, 5; services for children and youth, 1.

Within the sciences, the UI was ranked 24th nationally in the biological sciences for its graduate program; within sub-categories, the UI’s microbiology program was ranked No. 7.

The UI’s chemistry graduate program ranked sixth nationally; among the chemistry specialties, UI programs ranked as follows: analytical, 3; inorganic, 5; organic, 7; physical, 7; theoretical, 10.

The UI’s computer science program was ranked fifth nationally and subspecialties were ranked as follows: artificial intelligence, 8; programming language, 8; systems, 5.

The UI’s graduate mathematics program ranked 17th nationally; among the specialties within the department: algebra/number theory/algebraic geometry, 10; discrete mathematics and combinations, 9; logic, 3.

The UI’s physics program for graduate students was ranked eighth nationally, and the subspecialties offered by the UI were ranked as follows: condensed matter, 1; nuclear, 10; quantum, 10.
