Institute for Genomic Biology facility opens this spring
Four years after Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich and UI officials broke ground at a muddy site on Gregory Drive in Urbana, the Institute for Genomic Biology will officially open its $75 million, 186,000-square-foot facility in March. Some 250 researchers already work in the institute’s offices and laboratories. Full

GIs suffering from traumatic brain injury
Thanks to a $1 million, five-year training grant from the U.S. Department
of Education, Proctor and colleagues at the UI, working with
staff at area and regional hospitals, are hopeful that the situation
will improve soon for those suffering from pediatric TBI – traumatic

On Feb. 1, about 2,300 people – including students, faculty members, community residents and American Indians who had traveled from as far away as Chicago – packed Foellinger Auditorium and satellite locations at the Illini Union and Gregory Hall for an open forum titled “Racism, Power and Privilege at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign." He is working on a book about the efforts of former slaves in Mississippi to establish schools and become educated following emancipation. Events commemorate Black Chorus conductor’s 25 years
It’s no wonder the little car icon – advising patrons to allow extra time for parking – has been posted on the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts page promoting the Black Sacred Music Symposium concert on Feb. 18. The parking garage is likely to fill up fast as alumni of the Black Chorus – and countless other friends and admirers of the ensemble – return to campus to take part in the 7:30 p.m. performance planned to celebrate Ollie Watts Davis’ 25th anniversary as the group’s conductor. into National Inventors Hall of Fame
Paul C. Lauterbur, Nobel laureate and UI chemistry professor, will be inducted
into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Lauterbur was selected for
his pioneering work in the development of magnetic resonance imaging,

Joseph Wayne Ray, 86, died Feb. 8 at his Garden City, Idaho home. He was a plumber at the UI for 24 years. Memorials: American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Maxine LaVerne Ruwe, 86, died Jan. 28 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. She worked for the UI for 20 years. Memorials: American Cancer Society.
Bert Austin Sandy, 84, died Feb. 7 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He retired after 44 years of working for the Illini Union.
Janet E. Sawyer, 92, died Feb. 1 at her daughter’s home in Champaign. She worked in the Binding Division of the UI Library for 11 years, retiring in 1984. Memorials: First United Methodist Church of Champaign, Empty Tomb or the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance of Urbana-Champaign.

Ruth Wood, 94, died Jan. 28 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. She retired from the UI in 1974 from housekeeping.
