Copper nanowires grown by new process create long-lasting displays
A new low-temperature, catalyst-free technique for growing copper nanowires has been developed by researchers at the University of Illinois. The copper nanowires could serve as interconnects in electronic device fabrication and as electron emitters in a television-like, very thin flat-panel display known as a field-emission display. UI, Illinois chamber starting certification program for HR managers
More than 9,300 Illinois companies were investigated last year for alleged labor law violations, sparked by employee complaints about problems ranging from wages and overtime to workplace safety. Many problems likely could have been averted if human resource practitioners were better trained. To help plug the gap, the center is working with the Illinois Chamber of Commerce to start a new certification program to sharpen the skills of human resource managers across the state. Full story

Exhibition highlights students' design efforts to address disability issues
Industrial design students were matched with students registered with the U. of I.'s Disability Resources and Educational Services and with members of the campus's Delta Sigma Omicron service fraternity to create simple, low-tech product designs and prototypes that could enhance the abilities, independence and quality of life of students with disabilities. Mardelle J. Austin, 78, died April 21 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She worked nearly 30 years at the UI, retiring in 1988 as an administrative clerk in the UI Library. Memorials: Corn Belt Fire Protection District or the American Heart Association.
Thomas Howard Brown Jr., 80, died April 11 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Somerset, Ky. He worked as an usher supervisor at Memorial Stadium and as an usher at Assembly Hall.
Harrison Keith Cornell, 83, died April 20 at the Carle Arbours in Savoy. He was a 24-year employee of the UI and spent most of his time working at WILL-TV. He retired in 1990. Memorials: Canterbury Ridge, 1706 E. Amber Lane, Urbana, IL 61801.
Kathryn Louise Gallagher, 56, died April 22 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana. Gallagher had worked at the UI since 1996 and was a staff secretary (office manager) for Education Administration.
Richard A. Piccioli, 63, died April 17 in Champaign. He came to the UI in 1980 as an insurance manager in Risk Management. He retired in 1993 as a claims manager. He volunteered as game spotter for public address announcer Jim Sheppard at UI football games for 23 years. Memorals: Hopkins High School Historic Society Fund in Granville,Ill.
Keith Eric Prout, 46, died April 21 at his Urbana home. He was employed in food service at the UI. Memorials: the Prout family.
Stephen C. Schmidt, 87, died April 13 at ManorCare Health Services in Champaign. He was a professor of agricultural economics in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences until his retirement in 1991. Memorials: The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Church Street Station, P.O. Box 780, New York, NY 10008-0780.
