Farmers who plant - or replant - after June 20 may see yields shrink by half
A costly deadline looms for many growers in the Midwest, as every day of waiting for the weather to cooperate to plant corn and soybeans reduces potential yields. Research indicates that Illinois growers who plant corn or soybeans near the end of June can expect a 50 percent reduction in crop yield, according to a University of Illinois agriculture expert. Campus looks to alternative vehicles and fuels
The Garage and Car Pool in Facilities and Services dispenses 300,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline and 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel each year for the 216 passenger vehicles and 308 service vehicles in the campus fleets as well as hundreds of departmentally owned vehicles and equipment. With gas and diesel prices hovering around $4 a gallon – and predicted to hit the $5 or $6 mark by the end of the calendar year – fuel economy has become a vital concern. Full story
Faculty/staff feel crunch of rising gas prices
Commuters like Rene Dunnam, a business manager for the department of physics, are feeling the pain as gas pumps guzzle ever-growing portions of their take-home pay. Dunnam said that fuel costs for her and her husband, Jeff, have about doubled in recent months, and that they currently spend about $600 a month on gas to commute separately from their home near Gibson City to her job on campus and his job in Farmer City. Even though they drive fairly fuel-efficient vehicles, escalating fuel prices are taking a toll on their budget. Full story

Parking rates to be salary-based
A new salary-based parking rate system will begin July 1. The new rate structure will be calculated on 0.7 percent of each permit holder’s annual base salary. The system also caps rates at a maximum of $40 per month for FY2009. Full story |

Howard Cook, 84, died June 9 at his Champaign home. Cook joined the department of animal sciences in 1961 as a herder and became a herder foreman in 1966. He retired in 1989. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association, Provena Hospice or Faith United Methodist Church.
Richard Ryan Lytle, 94, died June 12 at The Carle Arbours in Champaign. Lytle worked in the UI chemical department as a maintenance engineer.
Helen Ogata, 88, died May 30 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Center in Urbana. Ogata started her career in 1943 in the UI Extension division and later was administrative secretary for the Office of Public Information. She retired in 1979 as administrative secretary in the department of social sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Memorials: American Cancer Society.
Helen Vaughn, 89, died June 2 at John and Mary E. Kirby Hospital, Monticello. Vaughn was a cook at the UI for several years.
