Illinois state scientific surveys become part of UI
The four state scientific surveys – the Illinois State Geological Survey, the Illinois Natural History Survey, the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center, and the Illinois State Water Survey – have become part of the U. of I.’s Urbana campus, under a measure signed June 30by Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The surveys will be organized as a new unit, the Institute for Natural Sciences and Sustainability, under the university’s auspices in Fiscal Year 2009, which began July 1. David F. Bushman, 62, died July 5 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Bushman was a professor in the School of Art and Design at the UI for 35 years, retiring in 2004. A memorial service will be held later in Champaign.
Geraldine “Gerry” M. Coad died June 29. Coad worked at the UI for 17 years, retiring in 1991 as a secretary IV in materials science and engineering. Memorials: American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
William L. Francisco, 75, died July 10 at his Urbana home. Francisco worked for UI Printing Services for 20 years, retiring in 2002. Memorials: to the family.
Thomas Lee Jones, 71, died July 1 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. From 1969 to 1975, he was an instructor in the College of Media (formerly College of Communications), teaching advanced courses in radio and television announcing, production and history of broadcasting. He served as faculty adviser to students in television workshop productions broadcast on WILL-TV. From 1975 to 1985, he served as director of broadcast services and associate director of the campus office of Public Affairs. From 1985 to 1991, he served as assistant director, then associate director of Disability Resources and Educational Services (formerly Division of Rehabilitation Education Services). Marion McGrath, 80, died June 27. She worked for Disability Resources and Educational Services providing Braille services to students. Memorials: National Braille Association, 3 Townline Circle, Rochester, NY 14623-2513.
Roslyn G. Schumacher, 87, died July 4 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Schumacher was a student services administrator, retiring in 1998. Memorials: Sinai Temple of Champaign, 3104 W. Windsor Road, Champaign, IL 61820.
Anthony Olan Tolen, 56, died July 2 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Tolen was a UI geographer/planner.
