RESEARCH Business 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005

TOPICS: Business | Economy

BUSINESS
Unincorporated businesses:The rapid expansion of non-incorporated businesses, such as limited liability companies (LLCs) and limited liability partnerships (LLPs), raises questions ranging from government regulation to professional ethics, according to the latest issue of the University of Illinois Law Review. (8/22/05)

ECONOMY
Flash Index: The University of Illinois Flash Economic Index rose to 103.4 last month from its 103.1 reading in January. February’s results continue to confirm that the Illinois economy is expanding at a moderate pace after a slow recovery from the 2001 recession. (3/2/05)

Flash Index: The University of Illinois Flash Economic Index continued its recent strong performance by rising slightly to 103.1 last month from 103.0 in December. (2/1/05)

Flash Index: The University of Illinois Flash Economic Index finished 2004 with a strong performance, rising to 103 from its 102.4 reading in November. (1/3/05)

LABOR AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS
Arbitration: In the wake of a 1991 court decision, a growing number of companies require employees to submit workplace disputes to an arbitrator. (9/14/05)

LAW
Litigious Japan: It’s a cliché that has outlasted its value – the picture of Japan as a culturally harmonious country whose inhabitants value peace and consensus over the clash of lawsuits and lawyers. Subjecting the question to empirical study, Tom Ginsburg, an Illinois professor of law, and Glenn Hoetker, an Illinois professor of business administration, report that Japan’s turn to litigation can best be attributed to an increase in the number of judges and lawyers and the economic downturn that struck the country after 1990. (7/21/05)

Property-tax relief: Are property-tax relief programs for the elderly justified in an age of shrinking government revenues and scaled-back public services? (6/13/05)

Social Security: Social Security is not “in crisis,” “unsustainable,” or even “bankrupt” – words that President George W. Bush has used to rally support behind his campaign to alter the retirement and insurance program – according to an article by a law professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. (5/13/05)
