Grad Student protest
Members of the Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) and supporters
picket on the UI Quad during a two-day work stoppage Nov. 28 and
29 organized to demand collective bargaining rights. Between 180
to 240 classes scheduled to meet in Davenport Hall, the English
Building, the Foreign Languages Building, Gregory Hall and Lincoln
Hall (3 to 4 percent of scheduled classes) were canceled by the
instructors in connection with the protests, according to a departmental
survey by the provost’s office. |

enzyme activity in humans is showing dramatic sensitivity to malignant

polar vortex influences winter cold, researchers say
A mechanism to explain how the behavior of the stratosphere may
affect tropospheric weather patterns has been proposed by scientists
at the UI. If correct, the idea could be included in models to better

for expanded on-campus child-care services
Having her only child when she was a teen-ager was the smartest
career move she ever made, according to Abigail Salyers, professor
of microbiology. If Salyers hadn’t become a mother as a teen-ager,
she said she probably wouldn’t have borne children at all,
given the tremendous demands of advanced study and a career in the

CAS director
William T. Greenough
has been appointed director of the UI’s Center for Advanced
Study. A professor of psychiatry, of psychology, of bioengineering
and of cell and structural biology, Greenough had served as interim

Educators at
the UI believe that now, more than ever before, there is a critical
need for Americans to have a deeper knowledge and understanding
of international issues. And one way to accomplish that in Illinois

UI faculty members receive Fulbright Scholar grants
Three UI faculty members have received 2001-2002 Fulbright Scholar
grants. They join about 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who have
received the grants in order to lecture or conduct research abroad.

On the Job
Julian Parrott started his career with the UI as a graduate assistant
adviser in the General Curriculum Center in the College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences 10 years ago. He is now the director of the center
and assistant dean of the college.

New
tax law offers employees tax-deferred savings opportunities
The
Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA)
allows UI employees to take advantage of higher contribution limits
under the UI’s 403(b) Tax-Deferred Retirement Plan (TDRP)
and the 457(b) State of Illinois Deferred Compensation Plan.

Frank
Connor,
73, died Nov. 24 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur. Connor was
a garage foreman for the UI garage and car pool. He started working
for the UI in 1984 as a garage attendant. Memorials: the Hammond United
Methodist Church.
Stella Josephine Ferguson, 79,
died Nov. 29 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Ferguson started
working as a clerk typist III for agricultural administration in 1978.
She retired in 1994. Memorials: Arthur Public Library.
Wilkin Freeman, 89, died Nov.
21 at Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Systems, Danville. Freeman was
a cook for UI food services from 1970 to 1975. Memorials: building
fund at Salem Baptist Church.
Harold W. "Hank" Hannah,
90, died Nov. 20 at Crossroads Community Hospital, Mount Vernon. Hannah
taught law at the UI from 1935 to 1971, when he retired. He held spring
semester appointments from 1972 to 1974. Memorials: Rotary Foundation
or the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Charles Knights, 85, died Nov.
15 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Knights was a building
service worker at the UI physical plant, retiring in 1977 after 30
years of service.
Francis McCoppin, 49, died Nov.
24 in Bement. McCoppin was a crop-testing specialist for the UI for
27 years. Memorials: Ivesdale Emergency Medical Service.
Marjorie McQueen Monkman, 71,
died Nov. 15 at Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine. Monkman was
a professor in the School of Social Work at UI from 1965 to 1990,
when she retired. She established the Marjorie McQueen Monkman Research
Fund at the UI, which provides an annual award to a junior faculty
member and is designed to assist in social work research, in 1995.
Memorials: Monkman Research Fund in care of Diana Stroud, School of
Social Work, MC-140; the Glen Allan United Methodist Church Building
Fund; or an organization of the donor’s choice.
Jacob Morenz, 87, died Nov. 23
at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Morenz worked at the
UI as a building service worker for 11 years, retiring in 1979. Memorials:
St. Paul’s or the Champaign County Nursing Home Auxiliary.
Stuart S. Nagel, 67, died Nov.
19 in Champaign. Nagel started working at the UI in 1962 as a professor
of political science. He retired in 1997. He founded the Policy Studies
Organization, a public policy research group. Memorials: Lymphoma
Research Foundation, 8800 Venice Blvd., Suite 207, Los Angeles, CA
90034.
Winifred McCue Norton, 89, died
Nov. 10 at her Urbana home. Norton worked in the UI College of Agriculture
Library from 1950 to 1963, first as a library assistant and later
as an assistant agriculture librarian. She was a visiting instructor
in the Graduate School of Library Science in 1964. Memorials: Community
United Church of Christ, Champaign.
Doris M. Norwood, 86, died Nov.
30 at ManorCare Health Services of Urbana. Norwood worked as a fountain
attendant helper at the UI from 1965 to 1985. Memorials: American
Diabetes Association or Bible Baptist Church.
Carl D. Piatt, 85, died Nov. 28
at Valley Baptist Medical Center, Harlingen, Texas. Piatt started
working as a construction laborer for the Division of Operation and
Maintenance in 1963. He retired in 1980. Memorials: Parkinsons’
research or donor’s choice.
Clareta Walker, 94, died Nov.
10 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. For more than three
decades, Walker worked with the UI Cooperative Extension Service.
Memorials: McKinley Presbyterian Church, Champaign or an organization
of the donor’s choice.
