In the same hall where campus and community members had convened
one year before seeking solace in tragedy's wake, people gathered
again at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts to commemorate
the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

cases of dog and squirrel deaths attributed to West Nile virus
confirmed at Illinois
The nation's
first documented cases of domestic canine and squirrel deaths
attributed to the West Nile virus have been confirmed at the UI's
Urbana campus. Officials stress, however, that people have a low
risk of contracting the infection from affected animals.

A six-year
campaign by a UI law professor to hold lawyers accountable for
preventing executive wrongdoing has ended in tough new federal
requirements.

Study
recommends improvements to Assembly Hall
The UI Assembly
Hall could see more than $60 million in improvements and additions
during the next few years if the university follows recommendations
in a recently released study. The next step will be to identify
private funding for the project.

seek additional funding for faculty/staff raises in FY04
The university will seek an additional $92 million in state funding
for next year to help alleviate this year's cutbacks.
Some of the increase would go to faculty and staff raises, which
were not given this year because of an $89 million deficit caused
by the effects of a state budget crisis.

Exhibition
of drawings features big names and emerging artists
As an art form,
drawing historically has played second fiddle to its jazzier,
more colorful cousins — painting, sculpture and installation
work. But the medium moved to center stage in a new exhibition
that opened this month at the UI's Krannert Art Museum.

Mary
Frances Bial, 81,
died Sept. 4 at her home in Danville. Bial worked for the UI for
31 years, retiring in 1977. She was a transcribing secretary for
the Illinois Natural History Survey.
Elton Everett Hill, 87, died Sept. 1 at Superior Care Nursing
Home, Paducah, Ky. Hill worked at the Illinois Geological Survey
and was an assistant hydrologist with the Illinois State Water
Survey before retiring in 1978. Memorials: Abraham Lincoln Presidential
Library and Museum Foundation, c/o Naomi Ramage, Illinois Historic
Preservation Agency, 500 E. Madison, Springfield, IL 62701 or
the UI Athletics "I" Fund, 1700 S. Fourth St., Champaign,
IL 61820.
Robert Eugene Johnson, 91, died Sept. 5 in Burlington,
Vt. Johnson was a professor of physiology at the UI from 1949
to 1973, serving as head of the department from 1949-1960. In
addition he was director of the University Honors Program from
1959 to 1967 and acting dean of the Graduate College from 1952
to 1953. He was granted emeritus status upon his retirement in
1973.
Richard Gordon Moores, 79 died Sept.
11 at his Urbana home. Moores worked at the UI for 28 years. He
retired in 1984 as publications editor and associate professor
in agricultural administration. Memorials: American Cancer Society.
August J. Pierce, 79, died Sept.
8 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Pierce was a painter in
the UI’s Division of Operation and Maintenance from 1977
until he retired in 1995. Memorials: Canaan Academy, Urbana.
Doris H. Whisenand, 75, died Sept. 13 at her home in Urbana.
Whisenand started at the UI in 1956 and retired as chief library
clerk in 1982. Memorials: Champaign County Nursing Home.
