Clinic provides
needed services while fulfilling research
One of the advantages of living in a community that’s
home to a major research university is access to resources that
would otherwise likely be available only in a large, urban area.
The Audiology and Speech Clinic, operated by the UI’s
department of speech and hearing science, is just such a resource
for residents of Central Illinois.

vote will decide on graduate student union
A December
election will determine if graduate assistants and graduate teaching
assistants on the UI’s Urbana campus will have a collective
bargaining unit representative.

in online courses continue to increase each semester
Enrollments
in online courses and degree programs at Illinois colleges and
universities continue to increase significantly each semester
as does the number of courses available by means of the Internet,
according to Illinois Virtual Campus (IVC), a clearinghouse
on distance-learning programs offered by the state's institutions
of higher education.

passes amendment restricting membership to tenured faculty
At its Nov.
4 meeting, the Urbana-Champaign Senate passed an amendment to
the University Statutes and Senate Procedures that will restrict
Faculty Advisory Committee membership to tenured faculty.

Steve Schomberg
promoted to vice chancellor post
Steven
F. Schomberg is to be promoted to vice chancellor for public
engagement and institutional relations, pending approval of
the University of Illinois Board
of Trustees at its meeting Nov. 14 in Urbana.

Between Sept. 1, 2001, and Aug. 31, 2002, 138 faculty members
and academic professionals retired from the UI, according to the
Office of Academic Human Resources. The full list of retirees,

Krol
takes time for self, travel and volunteering during retirement
So
less than 24 hours after his April 30 retirement, Ed Krol,
former assistant director of Campus Information Technologies
and Educational Services (CITES), and his wife, Margaret,
were aboard a plane to Paris.

Nearing completion
A craftsman from Kelley Monuments of Urbana etches names onto one
of four limestone tablets that will soon be erected at Memorial
Stadium. The tablets will list 932 Illinois alumni, students, faculty
and staff members who have died in wars and conflicts since World
War I. Memorial Stadium originally was built to honor the 189 Illini
who died in the first world war. The new tablets will be dedicated
Nov. 16 prior to the Illinois vs. Ohio State football as part of
a ceremony honoring all members of the Illinois family who have
served in the U.S. armed forces. The Veterans’ Memorial project
is an effort of the alumni association and the Urbana campus. |

parenting Web site includes video
A new UI Web site uses video clip interviews to let parents
of infants, toddlers and preschoolers see and hear how other
parents cope with the challenges of raising young children.
In addition to the video clips, the Parent-to-Parent Web site
features a message board, links to recommended resources, and
advice from experts.

Richard Carmien,
62, died Nov. 1 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Carmien
was a carpenter in the Division of Operation and Maintenance at
the UI and had been employed there for 40 years.
Robert T. Chapel,
55, died Nov. 3 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Chapel was
a library technical assistant in the UI archives and worked at
the UI since 1984. Memorials: the Champaign County Audubon Society,

Allison Dawn Dallas, 45,
died Nov. 3 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Dallas.
Dallas had worked as a secretary in the UI physics department
since 1994. Memorials: American Lung Association.
Charles Steelman Danner,
84, died Oct. 14 at ManorCare Health Services, Champaign. Danner
had been an associate professor at the UI. Memorials: to an organization
of the donor’s choice.
Lucy J. Goff, 92,
died Oct. 13 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Goff worked
at the UI as a secretary for 10 years.
Morris "Mike" Grindley,
81, died Oct. 30 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Grindley
worked for the UI physical plant for 22 years, retiring in 1984.

Frederick H. Kanfer,
76, died Oct. 18 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Kanfer

Mabel Jeanette Seidl, 90,
died Oct. 13 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Seidl

died Oct. 22 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Steward had
been a building service worker with the UI’s Division of
Operation and Maintenance since 1995.
