Phase one of South Farms modernization project under way
The UI marked the inception of an ambitious six-phase, multiyear plan to modernize the South Farms with a groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 26. University officials broke ground for the construction of a new beef and sheep complex near the intersection of Race Street and Old Church Road, between Urbana and Savoy.

Events will illuminate art, culture and history of the kimono
The art, culture and history of the kimono will unfold in September as ambassadors from the Hakubi Kyoto Kimono Schools of Japan travel to the UI and the Art Institute of Chicago to better acquaint Westerners with kimono culture and couture.

Ninety-three faculty members receive promotions, nine tenure without change in rank
In July, the UI Board of Trustees approved faculty promotions that became effective Aug. 21. Twenty-four promotions to professor and three to associate professor without change in tenure and 66 to associate professor on indefinite tenure were granted. In addition, nine faculty members received tenure without change in rank.

Dean W. Graves, 93, died Aug. 22 at Country Health Nursing Home, Gifford. Graves retired from the UI in 1965.

Kristi Karlan Johansen, 45, died Aug. 20 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Johansen was a cook in the Division of Housing. She had worked at the UI since 1995. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society.

VaLera P. Leemon, 91, retired in 1975 as a clerk typist III in the department of nuclear physics. She worked at the UI for nine years. Memorials: Morrison United Methodist Church, 1005 W. Main St., Leesburg, Fla., or Hospice of Lake/Sumter Co., 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.

Joseph L. Link, 79, died Aug. 17 at his home in Pesotum. Link worked in the UI department of mechanical and industrial engineering for 31 years. He was an electronics engineering assistant when he retired in 1984. Memorials: Provena Covenant Hospice.

Frederick “Freddie/Porky” McNeal, 44, died Aug. 15 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. McNeal was formerly employed by the UI as a computer operator and food service worker.

Marilyn M. Saathoff, 61, died Aug. 24 at her Urbana home. Saathoff worked at the UI for more than 27 years, most recently as a secretary IV for UI Extension. Memorials: Grace Lutheran Church, Champaign.

Hurst H. Shoemaker, 96, died July 18 in Sebastopol, Calif. Shoemaker was associate professor emeritus of the UI, having taught in the department of zoology from 1939 until his retirement in 1975.

Mary Margaret Sullivan, 89, died Aug. 25 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Sullivan worked at the State Geological Survey for 37 years, retiring in 1980. Memorials: Catholic Church Extension Society USA, 150 S. Wacker Drive, 20th Floor, Chicago, IL 60606-4200.

Elsa Singbusch, 89, died Aug. 19 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Singbusch was a staff secretary for the Office of Administrative Services. She worked at the UI for 33 years, retiring in 1980. Memorials: Go and Serve, c/o First Presbyterian Church, Champaign, or Barnabus International.
