research leads to new state law on child support
A 12-year educational
effort by a UI professor of family economics paid off earlier
this summer when a bill containing new guidelines for child support
in Illinois was signed into law.

about global warming
Despite huge differences in all kinds of resources, citizens
of poorer developing countries have essentially the same level
of knowledge about the sources of global warming as citizens
of richer developed countries – and that level isn’t
very high.

join federal center to study infectious disease

are part of a newly created, federally funded Midwestern Regional

Pacifica Quartet to perform, teach in residency at Illinois
The Pacifica Quartet, generally regarded as one of the most dynamic
string ensembles touring today, maintains an ambitious concert
schedule that keeps the group constantly on the move.But for the
next three years, UI will be Pacifica’s new home base.

College of Communications
to assemble task force to address concerns
Ron
Yates, interim dean of the College of Communications, said Sept.
16 he would soon begin to assemble a task force within the college,
which will represent “everybody who has a stake in the
college,” to address the concerns of the committee and
the provost. “There are no predetermined outcomes to this
whole process,” Yates said.

Trustees approve 7.3 percent
budget increase request
If
the UI gets what it wants from the state of Illinois for next
fiscal year, the result would be more teachers, smaller classes,
additional courses and raises for employees.

Gordon
Ware Binkerd, 87,
died Sept. 5 at his Urbana home. Binkerd became a professor of
theory and composition at the UI in 1949. He was the first music
professor to be elected to the Center for Advanced Study. He retired
in 1971 to write music full time.
Loretta June Deem, 70,
died Sept. 13 at ManorCare Health Services of Champaign. Deem
worked at the UI for 20 years, retiring in 1997 as a staff clerk
for the Alumni Association. Memorials: American Cancer Society
or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Myrtle Hildreth Dorsett,
67, died Aug. 30 at ManorCare Health Services, Urbana. Dorsett
was a book binder for UI Press for 34 years, retiring in 1990.
She continued to work as extra help until 1998. Memorials: American
Cancer Society.
Mary Elizabeth Hernecheck, 79,
died Sept. 2 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Hernecheck
was a draftsman at the UI College of Agriculture, retiring in
1982 after 29 years with the UI. She worked as extra help until
1991. Memorials: First Presbyterian Church of Champaign.
Lloyd Girton Humphreys,
89, died Sept. 7 at ManorCare Nursing Home, Urbana. Humphreys
joined the UI faculty in 1955 and retired in 1984 as professor
emeritus of psychology. He also was head of the psychology department
(1959-1969), a professor of educational psychology and acting
dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (1979-1980).

Helen Widdis-Melin, 63, died Sept. 8 in Montague,
Mich. She worked at the Counseling Center as a personnel assistant
II from 1982-1984. She then worked as a library technical assistant
I at the Library until 1987. Memorials: Fund for Pancreatic Cancer
Research, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Department of Surgical
Oncology, 1400 Holcombe Blvd., Box 444, Houston, TX 77030.
Dorothy Frances Witt, 79,
died Aug. 29 at Memorial Hospital, Gulfport, Miss. Witt had been
a typing clerk for the Purchasing Division since 1978 and had
been on disability since 1983. Memorials: First United Methodist
Church, Champaign.
