Cantor to leave for top
job at Syracuse
Nancy Cantor, chancellor of the UI’s Urbana campus since
2001, has been named the 11th chancellor and president of Syracuse
University.
She succeeds Kenneth A. “Buzz” Shaw, who will retire
Aug. 1 after having served as Syracuse’s chancellor and

During a special
meeting on Feb. 19 at UIC, the UI Board of Trustees will meet
with faculty and staff members and students to gather input from
the campus community as the university begins the process of finding
successors to President James J. Stukel and Urbana Chancellor
Nancy Cantor, who recently announced their resignations.

UI researchers have found a way to significantly improve the performance
of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers by drilling holes in
their surfaces. Faster and cheaper long-haul optical communication
systems, as well as photonic integrated circuits, could be the
result.

All low-income
working parents in Illinois can get subsidized child care under
one of the most comprehensive programs in the nation. But more
than half the parents get that subsidized care from providers
exempted from state licensing.

encourages trustees to retire Chief
The
recently announced resignations of UI President James J. Stukel
and Urbana Chancellor Nancy Cantor prompted several resolutions
that were passed by the Urbana-Champaign Senate at its Feb.

Erleen
Chatmon,
50, died Feb. 9 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Chatmon
started as a part-time secretary in the Admissions and Records
Office in 1994 and became full time in 1997.
Charlene Clark, 90, died Feb.
3 at ManorCare Health Services, Urbana. Clark was a maid for the
Division of Housing from 1947 until 1956 when she became a kitchen
helper in the Illini Union. She retired in 1975.
Dora Emma Eaton, 97, died
Feb 13 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Eaton worked
in food service in the Illini Union for almost 12 years, retiring
in 1971 as a cook. Memorials: Hope Chapter of Order of the Eastern
Star.
Wayne Eugene Koch, 83, died
Feb. 11 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Koch started as a building
service worker for Housing in 1963 and retired in 1990. Memorials:
First Church of the Nazerene.
Ellen L. Rhode, 93, died Feb.
3 at ManorCare Health Services, Urbana. Rhode worked at the UI
for 34 years, first as a clerk for agricultural administration
and later as the administrative secretary for the Office of the
Provost. She retired in 1978. Memorials: American Red Cross.
Chester P. Siess, 87, died
Jan. 14 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Siess was a professor
of civil engineering at the UI for almost 29 years, retiring in
1978 as professor emeritus. He was head of the department from
1973 to 1977.
