Home architecture lecturer
Sarah Susanka to speak Sept. 16
The Central Illinois Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the AIA Illinois Foundation and the UI School of Architecture’s Max Abramovitz Distinguished Lecture are co-sponsoring a lecture by author Sarah Susanka. Susanka will speak at 8 p.m. Sept. 16 in Foellinger Auditorium.

Susanka, the popular author of such books as “The Not So Big House” and “Not So Big Solutions For Your Home,” will be discussing her new book “Home by Design: Transforming Your House Into a Home.” A book signing will be held afterward. Spurlock Museum
New Focus Gallery exhibit to open
On Sept. 18, the Spurlock Museum will open its newest Focus Gallery exhibit, “A Celebration of Souls: Day of the Dead in Southern Mexico.” This holiday, held throughout Latin America, honors family members and friends who are gone but not forgotten. “A Celebration of Souls” will be on display through Dec. 30. The exhibit is part of a series of Day of the Dead events being hosted by the museum, Verde Gallery, the Champaign Public Library and the Urbana Free Library. This exhibition was developed by the Field Museum in Chicago in collaboration with Mars Inc.

Sinfonia da Camera
Local orchestra launches new season
After a successful 20th anniversary season, Sinfonia da Camera is now readying to launch its 2004-05 season, which will include music ranging from classical and romantic masterworks to a world premiere specifically written for the orchestra.

The season opens Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts with the internationally renowned Beaux Arts Trio, who will perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, a rare example of the composer’s use of multiple soloists. Also scheduled in the performance are Symphony No. 4 by Robert Schumann, and the overture to Rossini’s comic opera, “La Gazza Ladra.”

WILL-TV
Public forum for foreign policy
WILL-TV and the League of Women Voters will co-sponsor a communitywide public forum at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20. The forum, which will focus on how U.S. foreign policy affects residents of Central Illinois, will be held at the Illinois Terminal, 45 E. University Ave., Champaign.

Participating in the discussion will be Julie Misa, acting director of the UI Office of International Student Affairs; Deborah Hlavna, East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center; and attorney Lynne Feldman. Deborah Rugg of the League of Women Voters will moderate the discussion.

The forum is one of several WILL-TV projects planned as part of the “By the People: America in the World” initiative by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions to help create citizen debate and discussion about the necessary trade-offs and compromises involved in making foreign policy decisions and how globalization affects local residents.

WILL-TV and WILL-AM
Election 2004 forums to air
Beginning Sept. 23, WILL-TV and WILL-AM will air live forums on Thursday nights giving viewers and listeners an opportunity to hear candidates and election experts discuss critical national, state and community issues. The first program features a roundtable discussion by Central Illinois reporters.
WILL-TV will air the forums live from the WILL-TV studios, with WILL-AM (580) simulcasting the audio on-air and on the WILL AM-FM-TV Web site at www.will.uiuc.edu. WILL-TV’s John Paul, who will moderate the forums, will invite viewers to call in with questions and comments.

The 8 p.m. Sept. 23 discussion will include Bill Wheelhouse, reporter-anchor, WUIS-Radio Springfield; Bernard Schoenburg, reporter/columnist, Springfield State Journal-Register; Kate Clements, reporter/columnist, Champaign News-Gazette; and Charles Wheeler, professor, UIS.

Other forums:

  • 7 p.m. Sept. 30: 19th Congressional District candidates Republican incumbent John Shimkus and Democrat Tim Bagwell.
  • 8 p.m. Oct. 7: 15th Congressional District candidates Republican incumbent Tim Johnson and Democrat David Gill.
  • 7 p.m. Oct. 14: coverage of U.S. Senate race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Alan Keyes.
  • 7 p.m. Oct. 21: 103rd State House of Representatives candidates Democrat Naomi Jakobsson, Republican Deborah Frank Feinen and Thomas Mackaman of the Socialist Equity Party.
  • 8 p.m. Oct. 28: Presidential election roundtable discussion with Avis LaVelle, chair of Kerry for President in Illinois; Scott Althaus, UI professor of political science and of speech communications; and Peter Nardulli, a UI political science professor who recently completed research regarding the 2004 presidential race. Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar, Illinois chairman of the Bush for President campaign, is tentatively scheduled to appear.

LGBT
October ALLY Meeting, fall training
Kimberlie Kranich, a community activist, radio host and co-founder of CU at the Altar, a grassroots group in favor of legal civil marriages for same-sex couples, will make a presentation on activism and civil engagement of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues at the October Ally Meeting. The meeting, scheduled for 12-1:30 p.m. Oct. 1 will take place in Room 405 of the Illini Union. For more information, contact Jane Reid at 333-3704, or Anita Hund.

The ALLY Network also will hold fall training for those interested in getting a better understanding of the issues faced by LGBT students, faculty and staff members and in providing a safe space for them to deal with those issues. Training will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 8 in Room 211 of the Illini Union. The Coming Out Day Rally, which celebrates LGBT pride, also is Oct. 8.

Saturday Honors Physics Program
Physics lecture series begins Sept. 18
Now in its 12th year, the Saturday Honors Physics Program is a series of lectures on modern aspects of the physical sciences by renowned scientists, offered by the UI department of physics each fall. Although designed for high school students, the program is open to the general public and offers a unique opportunity to meet world-class researchers in a relaxed, interactive setting.

The program begins Sept. 18 with a lecture on “Steaming Geysers and Puffing Volcanoes,” by geology professor Susan Kieffer. Kieffer has been studying Old Faithful for 30 years to learn how it works.
On Oct. 2, physics professor Brian DeMarco will continue the series with “What Is Absolute Zero? Ultra-Cold Quantum Weirdness.”

All lectures are scheduled from 10:15-11:30 a.m. in Room 141 of Loomis Laboratory. Admission is free.

Japan House
Marbling lecture and demonstration
The Japan House will host Takaji Kuroda, a Japanese artist of Suminagashi, at 7 p.m. Sept. 21. Suminagashi, the traditional Japanese art of paper marbling, has a 1,100-year history. The advanced form, Suimonga, also will be demonstrated by Kuroda. Admission in free.

Center for Advanced Study
Deadlines for CAS programs approaching
The Center for Advanced Study is accepting applications for several faculty programs. The deadlines are:

  • Release-time appointments, Dec. 8:
    A few UI faculty members are selected to serve one-semester release-time appointments in the center as associates (tenured faculty) and fellows (untenured faculty).
  • George A. Miller Program (for spring 2005), Oct. 5:
    Applications are accepted for partial funding of visiting speakers or performers as well as for visiting faculty appointments.
  • Arnold O. Beckman Lecture in Science and Innovation, Oct. 5:
    Applications are accepted for a $3,500 grant to invite a speaker to deliver the Arnold O. Beckman Lecture.

Star Course
Indigo Girls to perform Oct. 17
The Indigo Girls, a veteran folk rock duo, will perform at Foellinger Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in support of their new album “All That We Let In.” The concert is sponsored by Star Course, a student-run promotion and production organization at the UI.

Tickets are are on sale at Illini Union Ticket Central. The doors opens at 6:45 p.m.

Krannert Center memorial concert
Martirano Memorial Award concert
The UI New Music Ensemble, under the direction of Eduardo Diazmuñoz, will perform the winning composition of the Eighth Annual Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Award at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Tryon Festival Theater of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. A reception in honor of the composer, Robert Yamasato, 22, of Kamuela, Hawaii, will immediately follow the concert.

The Martirano Composition Award and concert is held in memory of Salvatore Martirano, a professor of composition at the UI from 1963 to 1995. In its eight years, the competition has received 1,200 entries from 30 countries.

The award concert also will feature two solo works involving computer-generated sounds along with three works performed by the UI New Music Ensemble. Guest artists for this year’s concert include composer Linda Antas on flute and Salvatore’s wife, Dorothy Martirano, on violin.

UI libraries
Free library workshops open to all
All students, faculty and staff are invited to sign up for free workshops focusing on how to use the UI Library system by learning how to search for books and articles in a hands-on computer setting. The workshops, the first of which begins Sept. 27, will be offered through Nov. 17. For more information or to sign up for one, visit www.library.uiuc.edu/help/workshops/.

Prospective law students invited
Law School Day is Sept. 22
Illinois college students preparing to apply to law school are invited to attend Law School Day on Sept. 22.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Illini Rooms A, B and C in the Illini Union.

Representatives from more than 100 law schools are expected to be on hand to talk about their law schools and about the process of finding a law school and applying. Students also will be able to pick up applications, brochures, financial-aid information and other materials. The event is sponsored by the Midwest Association for Pre-Law Advisers, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Pre-Law Club, both at Illinois.
