Freshman class sets enrollment record
While the farmers in downstate Illinois are preparing for this
fall’s harvest, on the UI’s Urbana campus there is
already a bumper crop – of freshmen, that is. According
to preliminary enrollment reports, there are approximately 7,258
freshmen on campus this fall, a record high for the campus.

books that underscore what people know – or think they
know – about signs and parking lots, but also add visual
cues and access ramps to what they may have never even considered.

policy has failed to prepare nation for possibility of bioterrorism
Michael H. LeRoy, a UI professor of industrial relations and of
law describes a scenario of unpreparedness and says it reflects
“a disturbing consensus among medical and national security
experts” that, three years after the 9-11 attacks, federal
policy has failed to prepare the nation for the possibility of
bioterrorism through the deliberate spread of the variola (smallpox)
virus.

enjoying nature, say UI researchers.

Bomb-sniffing
dog newest member of UI Public Safety Department
The campus police department’s newest “officer”
has a nose for trouble.
Nala, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah) is
an explosives-detecting dog that joined the UI Police Department
this summer. Nala and her handler, Officer Troy Chew, are the
cornerstones of the public safety division’s newly formed
canine explosives-detection unit.

Trustees
approve FY05 budget, identify needs for 2005-2006
Already more than a month into the 2004-05 fiscal year, the UI
Board of Trustees approved an operating budget of $3.38 billion
for FY05 and an operating budget request for the coming fiscal
year increasing that budget by $87.8 million.

Illinois part of new center
bringing engineering into high schools
High
school students in technology education courses will start thinking
more like engineers if a new $10 million National Science Foundation
grant, involving the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
has the desired effect.

$200,000 grant for marketing, air services at Willard Airport
A
new $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation
to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will be used
to market and support existing air services at the university’s
Willard Airport in Savoy.

UI to host
world premiere of trilogy conclusion
Africa and Asia were the spiritual compass points for the first
two parts of Ralph Lemon’s monumental multimedia work
“The Geography Trilogy.” And now, for the last leg
of the journey – and the final installment of his trilogy
– Lemon puts his American homeland on the map with the
world premiere of “Come home Charley Patton” Sept.
21-22 at the UI’s Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.

Hugh
R. Bothwell,
91, died Aug. 30 at Arbor Trail Nursing Home, Inverness, Fla.
Bothwell was an electrical foreman at the UI for 17 years, retiring
in 1976. Memorials: Disabled American Veterans.
Gerald Michael Browne, 60,
died Aug. 30 at his home in Urbana. Browne was professor emeritus
of classics and taught at the UI for 29 years, retiring in 2003.
Memorials: the UI department of the classics.
Karl E. Gardner, 91, died
Sept. 3 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Gardner was an associate
dean and director of resident instruction in the College of Agriculture
for 18 years, retiring in 1977. Before that, he had been a professor
of dairy science, starting in 1940. Memorials: Teaching Improvement
Academy of the College of Agriculture or to the Sons of the American
Revolution Good Citizen Awards.
Walter Martin Griesheimer, 90,
died Aug. 29 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Griesheimer
was an employee of the UI physical plant’s electrical shop
for 30 years, retiring in 1980. Memorials: First Presbyterian
Church, 602 W. Green St., Urbana, IL, 61801.
Shirley Rae Lovenguth, 81,
died Sept. 10 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Lovenguth
was a secretary in the department of elementary education for
nearly 27 years, retiring in 1983. Memorials: Carle Hospice or
the American Cancer Society.
William Nickelson, 79, died
Sept. 3 at his home in Bondville. Nickelson was a parts manager
at the UI south garage for 36 years, retiring in 1987. Memorials:
Carle Hospice.
Marjorie Jane Rohrer, 85,
died Sept. 10 at her home in Champaign. Rohrer was a typing clerk
in the Office of Admissions and Records for eight years, retiring
in 1978. Memorials: Provena Covenant Hospice Care Program, 1400
W. Park St., Urbana, IL 61801.
Irene Tyler, 79, died Aug.
27 at Arlington Memorial Hospital, Arlington, Texas. Tyler was
a food service worker at the UI for two years, retiring in 1990.
