U-C Senate: Economic support a priority in 2005
Forging a new compact with state legislators, Illinois corporations and other constituents to garner greater economic support for the university will be a priority in 2005, according to plans articulated by the university’s new president, Joe White, interim chancellor Richard Herman told the members of the Urbana-Champaign Senate at their meeting Feb. 14.
 

Aggravated assaults, batteries up sharply at end of 2004 in UI district
Aggravated assaults and batteries were up significantly in the University of Illinois reporting district during the Sept. 1, 2004 – Dec. 31, 2004, reporting period, according to statistics released this week by the UI Division of Public Safety.

Alfred Owen Aldridge, 89, died Jan. 29 at his Champaign home. Aldridge, a professor emeritus of comparative literature, taught at the UI from 1967 to 1986. Memorials: A. Owen Aldridge Prize, Comparative Literature Studies, Department of Comparative Literature, 311 Burrowes Building, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802.

Etta Mae Arntzen, 81, died Feb. 7 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Arntzen worked as an associate professor of art at the UI.

Candice E. Brokoski, 54, died Feb. 5 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Brokoski had worked as a laboratory assistant in the department of crop sciences since 1989. Memorials: Urbana Free Library.

T. Emerson Cammack, 85, died Feb. 5 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Cammack was an economics professor at the UI from 1948 to 1985.

Zane Bland Carothers, 80, died Feb. 3 at Heartland Health Care Center, Paxton. Carothers was a professor of plant biology at the UI for 22 years, retiring in 1991 as professor emeritus. Memorials: UI’s Allerton Park or Heartland Health Care Center.

Glen E. Curtiss, 70, died Jan. 29 at White River Medical Center, Batesville, Ark. Curtiss worked at the UI for 12 years, mostly as an assistant steam operator for the physical plant, from 1951 to 1963.

Betty Frith, 78, died Feb. 3 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Frith worked in food service in the Housing Division at the UI for 10 years, retiring in 1970.

Merle B. Karnes, 88, died Feb. 3 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Karnes was a professor of special education at the UI, retiring in 1993. Memorials: Samuel A. Kirk Endowment, College of Education, Suite 38, MC-708.

Rado Leneck, 84, died Jan. 27 in New York. Leneck taught Slavic languages and literature at the UI from 1962 to 1965.

Gill-Chin Lim, 58, died Feb. 9 in East Lansing, Mich. Lim worked at the UI from 1985 until 1991. He was a professor of urban and regional planning and in the Institute for Government and Public Affairs.

Elizabeth Irene Lister, 74, died Feb. 4 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. She worked at the UI for 15 years, retiring in 1993. She continued as a duplicating machine operator as extra help at the UI until 2002.

Otha Paul Miller, 83, died Feb. 11 at Heartland Nursing Center, Casey. Miller was a building service worker for the Division of Operation and Maintenance for 19 years, retiring in 1983. Memorial: Heartland Nursing Center, P.O. Box 10, Casey, IL 62420.

John E. Pearson, 90, died Feb. 1 at Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green, Ohio. Pearson worked as a professor of general engineering, nuclear engineering, and environmental engineering in the department of civil engineering at the UI. He retired in 1974 after 35 years. Memorials: First Christian Church Endowment Fund.

Donald Harvey Skadden, 80, died Feb. 8 in his Sanford, N.C. home. Skadden worked on the UI accounting faculty from 1955 to 1973. He also was associate dean of the College of Commerce. Memorials: Skadden Family Scholarship Fund at St. James United Methodist Church, 504 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61832.

Bruce Taylor Jr.,
84, died Jan. 29 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Taylor worked at the UI for 34 years retiring in 1982 as a laborer-electrician foreman. Memorials: Elks’ Crippled Children’s Fund.

Patrick Kay Watson, 80, died Feb. 4 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Watson worked as a machinist for the UI for 38 years, retiring in 1986.
