In a new and novel study, scientists are looking to nature – specifically, to ants, bees and viruses – for ways to improve human collaboration during disaster relief efforts.

Resembling neatly stacked rows of driftwood abandoned by receding tides, particles left by a confined, evaporating droplet can create beautiful and complex patterns. The natural, pattern-forming process could find use in fields such as nanotechnology and optoelectronics.

Using a technique employed by astronomers to determine stellar surface temperatures, UI chemists have measured the temperature inside a single, acoustically driven collapsing bubble.

A. Lynn Altenbernd, 87, died Feb. 17 at Meadowbrook Health Center, Urbana. Altenbernd was a professor in the English department at the UI for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He served as department head from 1966 to 1971 and as associate dean of the Graduate College from 1980 to 1983. Memorials: Frank Hodgins Fellowship Fund, in care of the UI Foundation, Harker Hall, MC-386.

Catherine Louise Bensyl, 84, died Feb. 21 at The Carle Arbours. Bensyl worked at the UI for 22 years as a typing clerk III for the Division of Facilities & Services, retiring in 1982.

Marilyn L. Blair, 72, died Feb. 23 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Blair worked at the UI for 23 years, retiring in 1992 as a typing clerk III in the Office of Continuing Education. Memorials: the Hume Christian Church Building Fund.

John Richard Johnson, 69, died Feb. 17 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Johnson was a building service worker at the UI from 1993 to 1999. Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Boris Isaac Katz, 81, died Feb. 10 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Katz worked as a civil engineer at the UI. Memorials: Martin Luther King Scholarship Fund, in care of Blanche Sudman, Sinai Temple, 3104 W. Windsor Road, Champaign, IL 61820.

Carol A. Myers, 66, died Feb. 19 at Colonial Manor, Danville. Myers worked as a proofreader for the UI Printing Division for 29 years, retiring in 1998.

Lois Jane Phillips, 76, died Feb. 17 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Phillips worked at the UI libraries from 1978 until 1996 as a library technical specialist. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main St. Urbana, IL 61802.

Nancy Kay Stone, 63 died Feb. 16 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Stone worked in the Office of Admissions and Records at the UI from 1970 to 1973. Memorials: St. John Lutheran Church or Veterans of Foreign Wars, 609 Edgebrook Drive, Champaign, IL 61820.

Lawrence Layton Switzer Jr., 61, died Feb. 17 in his Danville home. Switzer worked for F&S at the UI for 17 years as a building service worker, retiring in 2002.

Derek Henry Wyld, 39, died Feb. 20 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Wyld worked in food service at the UI for four years, until his recent illness. Memorials: Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation Kidney Fund, 600 S. Taylor Avenue, St. Louis, MO, or to Wesley Church.
