House fires, catastrophic illnesses, spouses with addictions. These are just a few of the crises that could befall nearly anyone and wreak havoc on the family budget. And the Faculty/Staff Emergency Fund is there to help UI employees on the Urbana campus and their families during times of hardship.

Six academic professionals honored with CAPE award

Six UI employees received the 2005 Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence award at an awards ceremony and reception April 6. Now in its 17th year, the award program is designed to recognize the importance of contributions made by academic professionals on campus.

Carleton W. Briggs, 86, died March 16 in his Champaign home. Briggs was an instructor in drawing and painting at the UI from 1946 to 1983. Memorials: The Sierra Club, 412-1 Nicholas St., Ottawa, Ontario, K1N7B7, Canada, or the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Ave., Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606.

Edward I. Griffith, 86, died April 1 at his Urbana home. Griffith was a materials technology instructor at the UI, retiring in 1985. Memorials: Curtis Road Church of God, Champaign; Foursquare Church of Urbana; or to Carle Foundation Hospice.

Charles William Hancock, 57, died March 28 at his home in Urbana. Hancock had been a photographer at the UI Office of Printing Services since 1980.

Olive Heffernan, 75, died April 1 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Heffernan worked at the Illini Union Bookstore for 20 years. Memorials: St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Jane Ellen Lawrence, 49, died April 1 at Provena Covenant Medical Center. Lawrence was a secretary at the UI for more than 20 years, most recently in the department of physics. Memorials: American Lung Association, 1705 Gentry Square Lane, Champaign, IL 61821.

Coleman “Buck” McPhail,
75, died March 4 in Costa Mesa, Calif. McPhail was a backfield coach for Illinois men’s football from 1960 to 1966.

John B. Parrish, 93, died March 17 at Meadowbrook Health Center, Urbana. Parrish was a professor of economics at the UI from 1947 until he retired in 1981.

Margaret Bernice Varney, 77, died March 25 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Varney worked at the UI as a work program participant for UI Extension from 1990 until her retirement in 1995. Memorials: Ron and Ann Mullins, for the search for their daughter who has been missing.

Edmund Chester Williams,
68, died March 23 in his home in Edmond, Okla. Williams was a teacher and conductor at the UI. Memorials: Dr. Edmund C. Williams Memorial Fund, UI Bands, 1103 S. Sixth St., Champaign, IL 61820.
