Geologist
digs deep – the Pito Deep, 6,000 meters beneath the ocean
Late last January, while most people were battling winter’s
cold and snow, UI structural geologist Stephen Hurst left for
a monthlong cruise in the South Pacific. It was no vacation, though.
Hurst joined a team of scientists, engineers and technicians who
set sail from Easter Island to explore the Pito Deep, a rift in
Earth’s crust nearly 6,000 meters deep.

Distinguished Staff Award at a banquet April 12. The award recognizes
exceptional performance, and each recipient was awarded $2,000

Gerald
F. “Red” Bunton,
86, died April 15 at Burgin Manor, Olney. Bunton was a building
service worker for the Housing Division for 15 years, retiring
in 1982. Memorials: First Baptist Church, 400 W. Washington St.,
Newton, or to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Maribelle Dean, 83,
died April 14 at Clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana. Dean started at
the UI in 1958 and retired from the department of metallurgy and
mining engineering in 1987 as a staff secretary. Memorials: St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church, 708 W. Main St., Urbana, or to
the Parkinson’s Disease Support Group, in care of Carle
Foundation Hospital, 602 W. University Ave., Urbana, IL 61801.
Edward I. Griffith, 86,
died April 1 at his Urbana home. Griffith was a materials engineering
instructor at the UI, retiring in 1985. Memorials: Curtis Road
Church of God, Foursquare Church of Urbana or Carle Foundation
Hospice.
Leo E. Ingold, 77,
died April 12 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County.
Ingold worked as a police officer for the UI for nine years. Memorials:
Champaign County Humane Society or to the Urbana Police “Shop
with a Cop” Program.
Robert Keller,
60, died April 7 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Keller
had been an accountant I in the Office of Business and Financial
Services since 1989. Memorials: Sidney United Church.
Howard Fremont Kent, 85,
died April 13 at Care Centre, Urbana. Kent was a building service
worker for the Housing Division for nearly 18 years, retiring
in 1979.
Lois Marie Moody, 74,
died April 10 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Moody
worked at the UI for 14 years, retiring in 1983 as a typing clerk
III for Admissions and Records. Memorials: Provenant Covenant
Hospice Care Program, 1400 W. Park St., Urbana, or the Crohn’s
Disease Society.
Doris Irene Young, 78,
died April 9 in Kingwood, Texas. Young was a clerical worker for
the Film Center at the UI from 1969 until her retirement in 1984.
Memorials: American Heart Association.
