Social Security not in peril as President Bush suggests, expert says
Social Security is not “in crisis,” “unsustainable,” or even “bankrupt” – words that President George W. Bush has used to rally support behind his campaign to alter the retirement and insurance program – according to an article by a UI law professor.

 

Report: African-Americans under-represented on Champaign County juries
While finding no statistical evidence of bias in the selection of jurors, African-Americans were noticeably under-represented on juries in Champaign County. The report of observations of state and federal courts was conducted by the UI College of Law and the League of Women Voters of Champaign County.

A scholar working on a book about the war in Iraq agrees with a recent Human Rights Watch report that described Abu Ghraib as only the “tip of the iceberg” in terms of U.S. involvement in prisoner abuse.

Biosphere is source, not sink, for carbon dioxide emissions, study shows
Converting forests into croplands and pastures reduces carbon storage, say scientists who studied the impacts of human-induced change on terrestrial ecosystems. The study results have important implications for predicting carbon dioxide levels, and will help provide a more complete understanding of Earth’s carbon cycle.

The concept of a high-capacity superconducting energy pipeline, or SuperGrid, moved closer to reality when experts from industry, government and academia attended a recent workshop at the UI.

UI policy offers guidelines for using Social Security numbers
Because the UI collects and maintains private information on students and employees, it is important that faculty and staff members understand the specific laws and university policies that are in place to protect people’s privacy, say Mike Corn, director of security services and information privacy at Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services, and Carole Livingstone, associate provost and director of management information.

Grant will help Mortenson Center at Illinois assist African librarians
The Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the UI has received a grant that will, through the development of automated systems, assist it in helping African librarians to better serve the research needs of their users.

Mary E. Brockett, 83, died May 9 in Town and Country, Mo. Brockett worked in the Office of Admissions and Records for 13 years, retiring in 1984 as an admissions and records officer I. She also worked as extra help from 1985 to 1993.

Robert Fred Fitts Jr., 50, died May 15 at his Urbana home. Fitts had been an instructional computer programmer II at the Center for Teaching Excellence since 1991.

Oscar L. Gaddy, 72, died May 2 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Gaddy was an assistant professor of electrical engineering from 1962 to 1965; an associate professor from 1965 to 1969; and was promoted to full professor in 1969. He served as associate department head from 1971 to 1984, with responsibility for the graduate and research programs. He retired in 1993. Memorials: Champaign Salvation Army, P.O. Box 618, Champaign, IL 61824-0618, or to the Parker Gun Collectors Association, P.O. Box 6435, Charlottesville, VA 22906.

Everett P. Gibbs, 86, died May 2 at Asta Care, Paxton. Gibbs was an instructor at the Police Training Institute from 1967 to 1969; an extension specialist from 1972 to 1976; and an assistant professor from 1976 until his retirement in 1979. Memorials: Paxton American Legion Post.

Robert Mize Sutton, 89, died May 2 at his Urbana home. Sutton worked at the UI from 1948 to 1983. He was a history professor, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and dean of the Graduate College. Memorials: University Baptist Foundation Building Fund, 314 E. Daniel St., Champaign, IL 61820, or Provena Covenant Hospice Program, 1400 W. Oak St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Betty Turcott, 77, died May 1 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Turcott was a secretary for the civil engineering department at the UI.

Willis Dale Wilson,
79, died May 5 at his home in Mansfield, Mo. Wilson was a truck driver at the UI for 37 years.
