The human brain is composed of billions of cells, each a separate
entity that communicates with others. The chemical interaction
of those cells determines personality, controls behavior and encodes
memory; but much remains to be understood.

Trustees
approve FY07 operating budget
roposed conference center project at the Urbana campus was given
the go-ahead by the UI Board of Trustees when it met Sept. 8 at
the Illini Union in Urbana. The $11 million center, to be built
south of Assembly Hall, would be connected to a $15.5 million
hotel and restaurant complex planned at the site.

that became effective at the beginning of the 2005-2006 appointment

UI
employees required to complete ethics training
All UI employees at the Urbana and Springfield campuses and
in University Administration will be required to complete the
annual online ethics training between Sept. 15 and Oct. 16.
Training for all graduate assistants and all Chicago campus
employees will be Oct. 27-Nov. 29.

Williams’
‘Candles to the Sun,’ related events scheduled
One of the early works of Tennessee Williams – his first
full-length play, “Candles to the Sun” – will
receive its 21st-century debut at the UI on Sept. 29 at the Krannert
Center for the Performing Arts. The play runs through Oct. 9 and
will be the focus of a series of related events, Oct. 6-8, that
includes readings, short performances, lectures and open rehearsals.

Adrian
Jackson Durant Jr.,
83, died Aug. 31 at his Champaign home. Durant worked at the UI
for 12 years, retiring in 1977 as a professor of educational psychology.
He worked for many years at the Institute for Research on Exceptional
Children. Memorials: First Presbyterian Church of Champaign, 302
W. Church St., Champaign, IL 61820.
Joy W. Kristunas, 63,
died Sept. 5 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Kristunas had
worked as a staff secretary in the department of chemistry since
1983. Memorials: American Heart, Alzheimer or American Cancer
associations.
James Joseph “Jim”
Valek Sr., 77, died Sept. 4 in Columbia, S.C.
Valek was an assistant football coach at Illinois during the 1959
and 1960 seasons and head football coach from 1967-1970.
Walter B. Ziel,
82, died Sept. 2 at his home in Adams, Wis. Ziel was a UI professor
at the Police Training Institute for 15 years, retiringin 1985.
He was a pioneer in the field of chemical intoxication tests and
played a key role in setting up nationwide law-enforcement training
programs for breath-alcohol testing. Memorials: Doctors Without
Borders.
