formally inaugurated as 16th UI president
The Marching Illini led the procession of nearly 500 students,
faculty and staff members, alumni and 90 representatives of other
American universities and learned societies clad in academic regalia
from the Illini Union to Krannert Center for the Performing Arts
on Sept. 22. The occasion was the official inauguration of B.
Joseph White as the university’s 16th president.

$151.5
million in private gifts support UI programs
Gifts to the UI and the UI Foundation for the fiscal year that
ended on June 30, 2005, totaled $151.5 million, according to Stephen
K. Rugg, UI chief financial officer and treasurer of the UI Foundation.

Todd Martinez, a theoretical chemist at the UI, has been named

Joseph
Allen Jr., 94, died Sept. 22 at The Carle
Arbours, Savoy. Allen began his career at UI in 1940. He was coordinator
of graduate studies and head of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese
and of Russian and East European languages and literatures for
several years. He retired as professor emeritus in 1975. Memorials:
The Carle Arbours, 302 Burwash, Savoy, IL 61874 or the League
of Women Voters of Champaign County Memorial Fund.
Daniel K. Bloomfield, 78,
died Sept. 12 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Bloomfield
was a UI professor of kinesiology and founding dean of the College
of Medicine, serving in that role from 1970-1984. Memorials: Jewish
Federation, 503 E. John St., Champaign, IL 61820 or the UI College
of Medical Scholars Program.
Edward Arthur Cousins,
81, died Sept. 12 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.
Cousins was associate director of the Division of Operation and
Maintenance for 35 years before retiring in 1989. Memorials: First
Presbyterian Church of Champaign, 302 W. Church St., Champaign,
IL 61820.
Francis J. Fry, 85,
died Sept. 22 in Port Charlotte, Fla. Fry worked for UI from 1946
until 1983, retiring as an associate professor of electrical engineering.
Charles Wesley Schlatter, 91,
died Sept. 13 at Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System,
Danville. Schlatter worked for the department of chemistry as
a storekeeper for 18 years and also for Krannert Art Museum and
the School of Art and Design as a security guard for 10 years.

Max L. Seeds,
87, died Sept. 30 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Seeds
worked at UI from 1962 until 1975, retiring as a painter with
O&M. Memorials: Carle Hospice.
Mark Anderson Sprague, 85,
died Sept. 13 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Sprague
was a UI professor of art and design for 33 years, retiring in
1980.
Ellen Stahl, 49,
died Sept. 15 at her Champaign home. Stahl had worked for the
UI since 2001 as an applications specialist of the finance team
of the Enterprise Resource Planning Project of UI-Integrate. Memorials:

Donald Walker,
75, died Sept. 20 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Walker
