UI works with cities to improve pedestrian safety
University and city officials are looking at ways to keep pedestrians safer on campus following the death of freshman Sarah Channick of Deerfield, who was struck and killed by an MTD bus while crossing Sixth Street at Chalmers on Sept. 29.

Keep pet cats inside, stop feeding strays, cook meat sufficiently and reconsider the way the veterinary profession and public health agencies think – and teach – about the zoonotic pathogen Toxoplasma gondii.

University appeals NCAA policy
The UI has appealed the National Collegiate Athletic Association policy that labels the Urbana-Champaign campus’s use of the names Illini and Fighting Illini and the Chief Illiniwek tradition “hostile and abusive.”

Aggravated assaults increased in UI reporting district, statistics show
Aggravated assaults and batteries increased by about 28 percent in the UI reporting district during the Sept. 1, 2004 to Aug. 31, 2005, reporting period, according to statistics released this week by the UI Division of Public Safety.

 

Researchers seeking alternative to surgery for brain cancers
With a four-year, $450,000 grant from the James S. McDonnell Foundation, UI scientists are working to develop an immunotherapy that would be a safe alternative to surgery for brain cancers.

Charles D. Caraway, 34, died Oct. 14 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Caraway had been an extra help food-service worker since 1998. Memorials: Champaign Christian Center, 511 N. Neil St., Champaign.

Anthony K. Cassell, 63, died Oct. 9 at his Champaign home. Cassell joined the UI faculty in 1971. He had been a professor of Italian and of comparative literature. Memorials: Chapel of St. John the Divine Building Fund or American Cancer Society.

Dolores “Jo” Faullin, 72, died Oct. 10 at ManorCare Health Services, Champaign. Faullin worked as a secretary at the UI Benefits Center from 1980 until 1997.

Raymond Russell Marsh, 88, died Oct. 6 at Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana. Marsh worked at the UI for 30 years, retiring in 1975 as a natural science laboratory assistant III in animal sciences. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association.

Jack V. Washburn, 83, died Oct. 7 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana. Washburn worked at the College of Veterinary Medicine for 36 years, retiring in 1976. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main St., Urbana, IL 61802; or St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 708 W. Main St., Urbana, IL 61802.

Louis Bemis Wetmore, 92, died Oct. 4 at his Urbana home. Wetmore was a faculty member for 19 years, retiring in 1976 as professor emeritus of urban and regional planning. Memorials: Episcopal Chapel of St. John the Divine, 1011 S. Wright St., Champaign, IL 61820.
