more than 60 years old are as mentally sharp as 22-year-olds.

fast-growing weed, which is illegal to buy, grow and plant in
Illinois, smothers existing vegetation and has been spotted in

calls for input on Assembly Hall renovations
Chancellor Richard H. Herman said that he is seeking input from
students and the Assembly Hall Advisory Committee on proposed
plans for renovating Assembly Hall and possibly transferring administrative
responsibility for it to the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Street-design
project to be focus of planning meetings in Macomb, Ill.
A team of students and faculty members from the UI will be traveling
to Macomb, Ill., Nov. 4-5 to participate in planning and design
meetings that will focus on rethinking the use and design of Macomb’s

Campaign
to fund instructional building for College of Business
The College of Business is more than three-fourths of the way
to its goal of raising $75 million. The campaign will fund construction
of a new instructional building, double the college’s endowment
for named chairs, support programmatic initiatives and research,
and fund student scholarships and fellowships.

The 2006 "Big Brains" calendar contains artistically
enhanced brain scans of campus administrators, faculty and staff
members and students taken at Beckman Institute’s Biomedical
Imaging Center.

A delegation of officials from China was on the UI campus Nov.
1 to take part in a signing ceremony at the Beckman Institute
for Advanced Science and Technology.

NIH
grant to fund Nanomedicine Development Center at Illinois
A $6.2 million five-year grant from the National Institutes of
Health will fund the establishment of a Nanomedicine Development
Center to be directed by Eric G. Jakobsson of the UI.

joins alliance to find cures for infectious diseases
The
UI is participating in an international collaboration to use
nanotechnology tools for global health and medical research.
The project was announced Oct. 13 at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology.

Six
professors at Illinois elected as 2005 AAAS Fellows
Six faculty members of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
have been awarded the distinction of AAAS Fellow by the American
Association for the Advancement of Science: David F. Clayton,
Evan H. DeLucia, Dana D. Dlott, Ravishankar K. Iyer, Deborah E.
Leckband and Lawrence B. Schook.

Orville Barnes,
77, died Oct. 29 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Barnes retired as
a lieutenant from the UI police department with 35 years’

Betty J. Cook, 81,
died Oct. 28 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Cook
was a clerk at UI’s Central Stores, retiring in 1985. Memorials:

Ave., Champaign, IL 61821.
John W. Mangis,
81, died Oct. 28 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Mangis
retired from the UI as a building service worker. Memorials: First
Presbyterian Church, Monticello.
Joseph H. Reynolds, 64,
died Oct. 15 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Reynolds worked
at the UI for 21 years, retiring in 2001 as a unit manager for
Dining Services.
Sidney Rosen, 89,
died Oct. 27 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Rosen,
a UI professor emeritus of astronomy, taught courses in astronomy
and science and society. He also was involved in the Unit One
Living-Learning Program at Allen Hall since its inception in 1977.
Benjamin Phillip Uroff, 72,
died Oct. 18 at his Champaign home. Uroff was a UI professor of
history and taught Russian history for 32 years, retiring in 1997.
He also served as director of research for the Russian and East
European Center in the Office of International Programs and Studies.

Barbara J. Ward, 77,
died Oct. 27 at her Champaign home. Ward was a food-service supervisor
at the UI Varsity Room for 39 years. Memorials: Provena Covenant
