Homecoming highlights include new volunteer project
The UI will
kick-off its 96th annual homecoming celebration with a new
volunteer project involving hundreds of UI students assisting
dozens of community organizations. “I-Help:
A Homecoming Volunteer Project,” is based on the Chicago
Cares Serve-a-thon model. The project will get under way at
10 a.m. Sept. 30 at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center. Full

Trustees discuss
Global Campus, new online degree program
“The
time has come to write a next major chapter in the development of
the University of Illinois,” President
B. Joseph White told the UI Board of Trustees at its Sept. 7 meeting in Urbana.
White proposed doing that by implementing an extensive online degree program,
tentatively known as the Global Campus. White and Chester Gardner, special
assistant to the president for the Global Campus, outlined the initiative,
which would offer degree programs primarily over the Web to qualified students.

Private gifts to
university increase by 22 percent
Gifts to the UI
and the UI Foundation for the fiscal year that ended June 30 totaled
$184.9 million, an increase of more than $33 million over the previous
year, according to Stephen K. Rugg, UI chief financial officer and
treasurer of the foundation. Of the $184.9 million received, $40.9
million was given to the UI directly and $144 million was contributed

Dean Auer, 64, died Sept. 6 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care
Center in Coles County. Auer was a painter at the UI for
32 years prior to his retirement in 1995. Memorials: American
Diabetes Association, American Heart Association.
Larry L. Bell, 59, died Sept. 11 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Bell was
a facilities manager in the department of physics. He had worked at the UI for
10 years. Memorials: Larry L. Bell Fund.
William E. Kreuger, 84, died March 29 at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Kreuger taught
freshman English at the UI from 1952 to 1956.
Richard Dale Mahannah, 73, died Sept. 5 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Mahannah
worked at the UI for nearly 24 years in several departments , retiring in 1994
as a storekeeper in the chemistry department. Memorials: Champaign County Humane
Society or Provena Covenant Hospice Program.
Merrill May, 92, died Feb. 5 in New Mexico. May was an assistant professor of English
at the UI from 1936 to 1938.
Carlos J. Miller, 84, died Sept. 6 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Miller
worked at the UI for 31 years, retiring in 1979 as a building service worker
for Facilities & Services. Memorials: Bible Baptist Church, Champaign.
Alvin Neumann, 91, died Sept. 13 at Meadowbrook Health Center, Champaign. Neumann
was a professor of animal sciences and was in charge of the UI’s Beef Cattle
Division from 1953 to 1964. He retired in 1976 and later served as interim
department head from 1985 to 1986. Memorials: Trinity Lutheran Church, 701 E.
Florida Ave., Urbana, IL 61801, or Carle Hospice, 206-A W. Anthony
Drive, Champaign.
Roland L. Ruhl, 63, died Sept. 8 in Purcell, Okla. Ruhl came to the UI in 1970
and worked as an assistant professor of general engineering from 1970 to 1973
and a lecturer from 1973 to 1985, after which he did research and university
consulting from 1985 to 1997 in the Technology Audit and Assessment Program.
He had been an adjunct professor since 1985 and continued to participate in graduate
research.
Robert Eugene Soloman, 82, died Sept. 2 at
Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Danville. Soloman retired
from the UI after 34 years of service in 1984 as manager of
Central Stores Purchasing Division. Memorials: Oakwood United Methodist
Church Building Fund.
