Inside Illinois continues its tradition of introducing some  of the new faculty members on campus and will feature at least two new colleagues in each fall issue.

• Angelia Nedic, assistant professor of industrial and enterprise engineering, College of Engineering
• Michelle Nelson, professor of advertising, College of Communications
• William C. Olivero, professor of surgery, College of Medicine

Faculty members, academic professionals retire
Between Sept. 1, 2005, and Aug. 31, 2006, 84 faculty members and academic professionals retired from the UI, according to the Office of Academic Human Resources.
The retirees, their positions, units and years of service are posted on the Inside Illinois Web site.

• Debbie Day has devoted 32 years to fundraising for WILL AM-FM-TV and she's not done yet.
• Marvin Paulsen has officially retired after more than 30 years as a professor of of agricultural and bioengineering. But he's now enjoying travel ballroom dancing, gardening in addition to still spending time in the lab and with students.

Conceptual art on auction site calls attention to culture of consumption
Type the key words 'pink Melmac' into the search window on ebay.com and you're likely to find a few dozen matches. But each week for the past few, '50s dishware shoppers have reported among the rose-colored dishware offered for sale in weekly eBay auctions a series of pink 'plastic' objects created by Conrad Bakker, a UI professor of art and design. Lola Linda Lee Anderson, 65, died Oct. 12 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Anderson was a staff secretary, retiring in 1999 after 28 years of service. Memorials: Provena Covenant Hospice Care Program.

Alice A. Fiscus, 81, died Sept. 27 at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colo. Fiscus was a chief clerk in accounting when she retired in 1984. Memorials: Chapel of the Interlude or the American Heart Association in care of Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80537.

Charles Frederick, 93, died Oct. 2 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Frederick retired from the UI Physical Plant in 1974. Memorials: Sidney Christian Church.

Thomas “T.J.” Howard, 70, died Oct. 9 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Howard worked for the UI power plant for 29 years, retiring in 1997.

David F. Huxhold, 65, died Oct. 1 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Huxhold was a UI building service worker for more than 30 years. Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Nelson J. Leonard, 90, died Oct. 9 at home in Pasadena, Calif. Leonard taught at the UI for 44 years, retiring in 1986 as professor emeritus of chemistry. He also was a professor in the Center for Advanced Study. Memorials: Pasadena Symphony Nelson J. Leonard Fund or the UI Nelson J. Leonard Fund.

Solomon B. Levine, 86, died Oct. 3 at Meriter Hospital in Madison, Wis. Levine taught in the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations from 1949-1960. He served as professor and director of the Asian Studies Program from 1964-1968.

Donald E. “Hap” Wheeler, 79, died Oct. 1 at Williamsport Health and Rehab Center, Williamsport, Ind. Wheeler was a building service foreman, retiring in 1997 with 11 years of service. Memorials: Williamsport Health and Rehab Center, 200 Short St., Williamsport, IN 47918.

Mary Estella Williams, 85, died Oct. 1 at ManorCare Health Services of Champaign. Williams worked for food services at the Illini Union for 35 years, retiring  in 1976.  Memorials: First United Methodist Church, Urbana or the American Cancer Society.

Memorials
A memorial service for James W. Carey, former dean of the College of Communications, will take place from 11 a.m.to 12:45 p.m. Oct. 28 in 112 Gregory Hall. A reception will follow the service at Alice Campbell Alumni Center. In addition a symposium of his work will be presented from 1 to 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in Room 210 Illini Union with dinner following at 8 p.m. Carey died May 23 at his home in Wakefield, R.I.

A memorial service for Walter Philipp, professor emeritus of statistics and of mathematics and a faculty member at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, will take place at 4 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Beckman Institute auditorium. Philipp died July 19 while mountain climbing in his native Austria.
