A protein known primarily for its role in killing cells also plays a part in memory formation, researchers at the UI report. Their work exploring how zebra finches learn songs could have implications for treatment of neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Mary Nancy Anniss Adair, 88, died Dec. 19 in Albion, Ill. She retired in 1985 from the home economics department at the UI. Memorials: Ellery Christian Church and Edwards County Senior Citizens Center.

Carl Brocksmith, 79, died Jan. 12. He was an operating engineer at the UI for 26 years. Memorials: River Valley Church of Christ, Rt. 136, Fisher, IL 61843.

John S. Clifford, 90, died Dec. 18 at home in Champaign. He worked for 18 years as a UI pipe fitter. He retired in 1981. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society.

Leon F. “Goody” Goodyear, 87, died Dec. 18 at the Carle Arbors, Savoy. Goodyear worked in the UI chemistry department as a glassblower and laboratory manager for 32 years, retiring in 1979.

James Andrews Gray, 57, died Dec. 6. Gray was the supervisor of graphic services at the UI School of Chemical Sciences, retiring in May 2002. Memorials: Empty Arms support group at Windsor Road Christian Church, 2501 W. Windsor Road, Champaign IL 61820.

Ralph Folsom Hamlin, 58, died Dec. 25 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was a UI police officer for 16 years, retiring in 2006. Memorials: William and Hannah Hamlin fund at the Longview State Bank, in Longview, Ill.

Samuel Shozo Komorita, 79, died Dec. 11 at Helia Health Care, Champaign. Komorita was a UI professor of psychology for 20 years, retiring in 1994 as professor emeritus. Memorials: Department of Psychology, UI Foundation, Harker Hall, MC-386. 

Norman T. McFarland, 76, died Dec. 25 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was a professor of industrial design for 33 years, retiring in 1990 as professor emeritus.

Michael E. Plotner, 62, died Jan. 7 in Rochester, Ind. Plotner retired from the UI agronomy department after 38 years as farm foreman. He also taught in the agriculture department. Memorials: Tolono United Methodist Church.

Ross Dean Scoggins, 71, died Dec. 29 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Scoggins was an equine and sheep extension veterinarian at the UI College of Veterinary Medicine for 27 years, retiring in 2004. Memorials: American Cancer Society or the Countryside United Methodist Church. 

Mildred “Micki” Stevens, 90, died Dec. 27 at home in Urbana. She was a secretary in the UI biology department for 20 years, retiring in 1982. Memorials: American Heart Association or First United Methodist Church of Urbana. 

James William Renshaw, 57, died Dec. 5 at home in Rantoul. He worked in Administrative Information Systems and Services until 1981.

Wilhelm R. Schmit, 70, died Dec. 31 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was a sheet metal worker for the UI for 17 years. Memorials: Vermilion County Animal Shelter, 1477 S. Catlin-Tilton Road, Danville, IL 61834.

Victor Chikezie Uchendu, 76, died Dec. 7. He became a UI professor of anthropology in 1970 became director of the African Studies Center the next year.

Carl R. Walters, 84, died Oct. 6 at Illiana Heath Care Systems, Danville. He worked as a storekeeper in Central Stores, retiring in 1983. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society.
