Service ensures access to course materials for students with disabilities
About 1,000 students on the UI campus are identified as having disabilities. Ensuring that those students have access to the same learning materials as their non-disabled peers is one of the responsibilities of Angella Anderson, disability specialist and supervisor of text conversion in the Text Conversion Office in the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services. Illinois budget: 2.3 percent more for higher ed?
The UI would receive a $13.3 million increase in its general funds appropriation during fiscal year 2008, which will begin July 1, if the budget proposed by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on March 7 is approved by the Illinois General Assembly. Overall, Blagojevich proposed increasing general funds appropriations for higher education operations and grants by $51.9 million, or 2.3 percent, over FY07 levels. Full story |

Trustees vote to support Global Campus Partnership
Two landmark decisions were made by the UI Board of Trustees at its March 13 meeting in Urbana: the decision to support a consensus resolution to retire Chief Illiniwek, and another to proceed with the Global Campus Partnership, an initiative that will offer degrees, certificates and professional development courses to a worldwide audience primarily through the Web. Robert B. Graves, the interim dean of the UI College of Fine and Applied Arts, has been
selected to be the college’s permanent dean. The appointment was approved by the UI Board of Trustees at its May 13 meeting . The appointment is

GEO ratifies three-year contract
The Graduate Employees Organization, IFT-AFT Local 6300, recently ratified its second three-year contract with the university. The GEO represents about 2,800 of the 6,048 graduate assistants on the Urbana campus. Its members had been working without a contract since August, when the initial contract expired. Full story |

Gabor “Gabi” Belso, 70, died March 6 in Champaign. He was a stagehand at the UI Assembly Hall from 1957 to 1971.
Larry J. Birch, 65, died March 6 at Kindred Hospital in Sycamore, Ill. Birch had worked as a building service worker for Facilities and Services since 2001. Memorials: American Lung Association, Kindred Hospital, 225 Edward St., Sycamore, IL 60178; or The Pay it Forward House, 719 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178.
Sam J. Bundy, 59, died Feb. 28 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Bundy worked at the UI for 26 years, retiring in 2003 as a sheet metal worker. Memorials: Unity Baptist Church Building Fund, 404 S. Duncan Road, Champaign, IL 61822.
James E. Corbin, 85, died March 1 at his Urbana home. Corbin came to the UI in 1973 to help develop the Companion Animal Science Program. He retired as professor emeritus in 1984. Memorials: Canine Connection or Lifeline Pilots.
Dorothy Fay Dunn, 96, died March 6 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She was a professor of health science for 16 years, retiring in 1967. Memorials: UI Foundation, Harker Hall, Urbana, IL 61801.
Joseph A. Jackobs, 89, died Feb. 25 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He was a professor of agronomy at the UI.
Bernard Karsh, 76, died March 7 at Meadowbrook Health Center, Urbana. He was a professor of sociology and industrial relations at the UI. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter, 405 Pine St., Suite A, Normal, IL 61761.
Robert C. Olson, 86, died March 5. He worked at the UI for 32 years as an internal auditor, retiring in 1978. Memorials: Grace Lutheran Church of Champaign or Faith Lutheran Church of Sullivan.
Robert Reuter, 85, died Feb. 18 at The Carle Arbours in Savoy. He worked at the UI for 21 years, retiring in 1987 as a purchasing assistant II. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society or the American Lung Association.
