Insights into osteosarcoma in cats and dogs may improve palliative care
Researchers at the University of Illinois have found that a molecular pathway known to have a role in the progression of bone cancer in humans is also critical to the pathology of skeletal tumors in dogs and cats. A number of UI units ranked highly in the 2008 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” published in the April 9 edition of U.S.News & World Report. Full story
YouTube co-founder to be commencement speaker at Illinois
Jawed Karim, an alumnus of the UI and a co-founder of YouTube, a popular video-sharing Web site, will be the speaker at the 136th UI Commencementon May 13. Full story
  Future of Campus Research Board discussed
In a March 27 e-mail message to faculty members, Charles Zukoski, vice chancellor for research, said that he is seeking the advice of the Research Policy Committee about possible restructuring of the research board’s policies and how best to direct its funding in Fiscal Year 2008. Full story
 

Urbana-Champaign Senate discusses future committees
A new working group is being formed on the Urbana campus to explore issues involving the Global Campus Partnership, Chancellor Richard Herman said at the April 26 meeting of the Urbana-Champaign Senate. Full story

  UI retains trademark rights to Chief Illiniwek imagery
The UI plans to maintain ownership of the trademark rights to the Chief Illiniwek logo, the controversial symbol of the Urbana campus for about 80 years that was retired after the performance at the final home men’s basketball game Feb. 21. Full story
 

Committee considers undergraduate education pathways, possible curricula changes
Almost 20 percent of undergraduate students at Illinois take more than six years to graduate, and the percentage is even higher among students from underrepresented groups. The Pathways in Undergraduate Education Committee, formed by Provost Linda Katehi and chaired by Steven Leigh, a professor of anthropology, is examining curricula to determine if unexpected and undesirable barriers exist that impede students. Frank B. Knight, 73, died March 19 at The Carle Arbours in Savoy. Knight, a professor emeritus of mathematics taught at the UI from 1963 until 1991, when he retired. Memorials: Grace Lutheran Church Food Pantry, 313 S. Prospect Ave., Champaign, IL 61820.

Paul Christian Lauterbur, 77, died March 27 at his Urbana home. Lauterbur was a professor of chemistry at the UI and received a Nobel Prize in 2003 for his pioneering work in the development of magnetic resonance imaging. He came to the UI in 1985 and served on the faculty for 22 years.

Linda “Sue” S. Motsinger, 66, died March 24 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Motsinger worked for the UI as a clerk typist from 1965-1970. Memorials: National Kidney Foundation or American Diabetes Association.

Wilma Muirheid, 93, died Feb. 22 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She worked as a kitchen helper in the Illini Union from 1966-1972. Memorials: First Church of Christ Scientist, 602 W. Church St., Champaign, IL 61820.

Helen C. Peterson, 81, died March 25 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She held many positions at the UI before serving as assistant dean in the Graduate College from 1967-1987.
