Trustees approve January launch for Global Campus

The Global Campus online education program has moved closer to its planned January 2008 launch. The UI Board of Trustees approved a financing plan and set tuition and fees for the first four programs during the board’s July 30 meeting in Chicago. Full story

Hepatitis C helicase unwinds DNA in a spring-loaded, 3-step process

The process by which genes are duplicated is mysterious and complex, involving a cast of characters with diverse talents and the ability to play well with others in extremely close quarters. A key player on this stage is an enzyme called a helicase. Its job is to unwind the tightly coiled chain of nucleic acids – the DNA or RNA molecule that spells out the organism’s genetic code – so that another enzyme, a polymerase, can faithfully copy each nucleotide in the code. Simulations unravel outer membrane transport mechanism

Using X-ray data and advanced computer simulation and visualization software, researchers at the University of Illinois have painstakingly modeled a critical part of a mechanism by which bacteria take up large molecules. Their findings provide a rare window on the complex interplay of proteins involved in the active transport of materials across cell membranes. Full story

 

Aging adults have choices when confronting perceived mental declines

Aging adults may joke about memory lapses and “early Alzheimer’s.” They may worry when they can’t understand a drug plan or lose track of the characters in a novel. But they have more control over their “cognitive vitality” than they may realize, says Elizabeth Stine-Morrow, a professor of educational psychology at the UI, who has spent 20 years studying learning throughout the lifespan. Campus domain change will solidify campus identity

The UI’s Urbana campus is moving to a better address – on the World Wide Web. The change is part of an initiative that aims to heighten perceptions of the Illinois brand among key audiences, nationally and internationally, and broaden opportunities for education, research and public engagement. Steven David Finley, 60, died July 19 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Finley had worked at the UI for 26 years. He retired in 2006 as a stores supervisor for the School of Chemical Sciences.

Carol Ann Rhoden, 60, died July 17 at her home in Ogden. Rhoden retired from the UI in 2004, having worked as a cook for Housing for 19 years.

Jerry Tessin, 65, died July 16 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Tessin worked at the UI for more than 32 years retiring in 2004 as head of Continuing Education in Music. Memorials: American Diabetes Association, Memorial and Honor Program, P.O. Box 11537, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Clarence Marvin Wayman, 76, died July 29 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana. Wayman was a professor of metallurgy for more than 39 years, retiring in 1995 as professor emeritus. Memorials: department of materials science and engineering for a scholarship in the Metallurgical Engineering Program.
