Wasp genetics study suggests altruism evolved from maternal behavior

Researchers at the UI have used an innovative approach to reveal the molecular basis of altruistic behavior in wasps. The research team focused on the expression of behavior-related genes in Polistes metricus paper wasps, a species for which little genetic data was available when the study was begun. Their findings appear today online in Science Express. Full story

Researchers set new record for brightness of quantum dots

By placing quantum dots on a specially designed photonic crystal, researchers at the University of Illinois have demonstrated enhanced fluorescence intensity by a factor of up to 108. Potential applications include high-brightness light-emitting diodes, optical switches and personalized, high-sensitivity biosensors. Full story

Symposium marks 30th anniversary of discovery of third domain of life

Thirty years ago this month, researchers at the UI published a discovery that challenged basic assumptions about the broadest classifications of life. Their discovery – which was based on an analysis of ribosomal RNA, an ancient molecule essential to the replication of all cells – opened up a new field of study, and established a first draft of the evolutionary “tree of life.” Full story

Wanted: Citizen scientists to help track wild bees in Illinois

Honey bee colonies are in decline in many states, but little is known about their wild cousins, the bumble bees, or, for that matter, honey bees living on their own in the wild without beekeepers. A new initiative from the UI seeks to build a better record of honey bee and bumble bee abundance and distribution in Illinois by recruiting citizen scientists to report on wild bees seen anywhere in the state. Program seeks to increase number of transfer students at UI

Each year about 125,000 students enroll in baccalaureate transfer programs at community colleges in Illinois, but only a small number of those students actually transfer to four-year public institutions, and many of the students who do transfer never achieve their dreams of earning four-year degrees, according to the Illinois Board of Higher Education. New Faces 2007
Among the newcomers to the Urbana campus are more than 7,500 freshmen and about 100 tenure/tenure track faculty members whose appointments began this summer or fall. Inside Illinois continues its tradition of introducing some of the new faculty members on campus and will feature at least two new colleagues in each fall issue.

Historic designation, conference recognize importance of superconductivity theory

To commemorate the pioneering work of UI researchers in understanding the mechanism of superconductivity, the American Physical Society has designated the old Physics Building, 1304 W. Green St., Urbana, as a site of historic significance to physics. The building now houses the department of materials science and engineering. Full story

Patricia Ruth Bandy, 81, died Oct. 4 at her Champaign home. She retired as a secretary III at University High School in 1983 after 17 years of service. Memorials: University Place Christian Church.

Deno John Geanakoplos, 91, died Oct. 4 in Hamden, Conn. He was a professor of medieval history at the UI from 1954 to 1967.

Walter A. Kurasek, 89, died Oct. 9 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was an engineer draftsman for the UI for 16 years until his retirement in 1977.

Charles J. McIntyre, 86, died Oct. 8 at Meadowbrook Health Center in Urbana. McIntyre worked at the UI for 38 years. He was a professor of educational psychology at the UI and founder and director of the university’s Office of Instructional Resources, retiring in 1997. Memorials: Joanne J. and Charles J. McIntyre Endowment Fund for Young Artists at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, WILL Radio and TV and Champaign County CASA.

Wallace D. Motley, 65, died Sept. 18 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He joined the Auditing Division at the UI in 1972. Later, he designed computer programs for various departments before his retirement in 1997. He returned part-time, then fully retired in June 2007. Memorials: animal-welfare organizations.

Frances “Fran” Mary Walsh, 92, died Sept. 16 at home in Lexington, Ky. She worked as a snack bar attendant for Housing from 1967 to 1973 and again from 1974 to 1975.
