Urbana campus e-mail transition to illinois.edu under way

The UI’s Urbana campus has a new address. E-mail address, that is. Since May 13, students and faculty and staff members have been able to use NetID@illinois.edu e-mail addresses. As part of the branding initiative aimed at standardizing the Urbana campus’s identity as “Illinois,” the campus is transitioning to the www.illinois.edu Web domain. Full story

Female concave-eared frogs draw mates with ultrasonic calls

To draw their mates, female concave-eared torrent frogs emit a high-pitched chirp that to the human ear sounds like that of a bird. This is one of several unusual frog-related findings reported this week in the journal Nature. Full story

"Brilliant Futures: The Campaign for the University of Illinois” has reached 60 percent – $1.343 billion – of its $2.25 billion goal, the UI Foundation recently announced. Alumni have pledged to contribute $451 million, corporations and businesses $180 million, and other donors have committed to $115 million. Full story

Forest N. Baker, 90, died May 5 at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo, Ill. Baker was a research associate in dairy science for 15 years, retiring from the UI in 1965.

Maurice G. Greever, 76, died April 28 at Heartland Health Services, Champaign. Greever worked as a carpenter for Facilities and Services for 25 years, retiring in 1992.

Jerry Hirsch, 85, died May 3 at his Urbana home. Hirsch was a professor of psychology and of animal biology for 33 years, retiring as professor emeritus in 1993. He continued his research on behavior-genetics after his retirement until 2004. Memorials: Jerry Hirsch Memorial Fund, UI Foundation, 1305 W. Green St., Urbana, MC-386.

David Muller, 83, died April 27 at his home in Las Cruces, N.M. Muller was a professor of mathematics and of computer science at the UI for 39 years, retiring in 1992. Memorials: American Civil Liberties Union or United Way.

Stanley N. Roscoe, 87, died Nov. 18 at his home in McKinleyville, Calif. Roscoe was at the UI for more than 29 years, retiring in 1979 as professor emeritus. He was associate director of the Institute of Aviation and head of the Aviation Research Laboratory from 1969 to 1975. He served as professor of aviation, of psychology and of aeronautical and astronautical engineering while at Illinois.

Lum Curtis Rose Jr., 50, died May 2. Rose was formerly employed in food service at the UI.

Margaret Hougham Webb, 95, died May 5. Webb was on the staff of the UI Library for 15 years, retiring in 1981 as associate professor. Memorials: Clark-Lindsey Village.
