Doolen scholarships for study on aging available

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Applications are available for the 18th annual Paul D. Doolen Graduate Scholarship for the Study of Aging, sponsored by the Retirement Research Foundation.

Two graduate students, one from the biological-biomedical sciences and the other from the behavioral-social sciences, will each receive up to a $4,000 scholarship for the 2003-2004 academic year. The award will be given to students whose principal scholarly interest is in the field of aging. Students who hold an assistantship or fellowship will receive priority consideration for the award.

The Retirement Research Foundation uses the award to stimulate and support interest in the biological or sociological aspects of aging or treatment diseases of the elderly. Last year’s applicants came from diverse curricula such as community health-gerontology, disability studies, kinesiology, nursing research and pharmaceutics.

The current holders of the Doolen scholarships are two students from the Champaign-Urbana campus: Kirk Erickson, a doctoral student in biological psychology, and Jason O’Connor, a doctoral student in animal sciences.
