CHAMPAIGN, Ill. —
Lapsed or pricey subscriptions and lost passwords are problems of the
past. Now students and faculty and staff members at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have free access to the online edition
of the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Most campus computers will be able to directly access the Chronicle
of Higher Education at www.library.uiuc.edu/orr/get.php?instid=275135.
Off-campus users and some on-campus users will need to provide their
network ID and password for authentication.
“The Chronicle is one of the most highly read education dailies
in the country,” said Karen Schmidt, acting
university librarian.
“I would imagine that our campus community has hundreds of subscriptions
at a current individual cost of $82.50. This new campuswide subscription
brings the Chronicle to everyone’s desktop. The benefits in cost
savings and ease of access are obvious.”
According to Schmidt, the arrangement was brokered through the U. of
I. Library’s participation in CARLI,
a consortium of academic and research libraries in Illinois
“The Chronicle was high on our wish list for CARLI to acquire
and we are very pleased to see the great deal they were able to broker.”
In addition to reading the online editions of the Chronicle and accessing
its archives, campus users can set up their computers to receive Chronicle
RSS news feeds.
